It really ties the room together.
It's offensive to call someone from eastern asia, oriental. Because they're not a rug. They're people. Calling a rug oriental is okay.
This is one example where oriental is appropriate in the English language, meaning from the east, and the design is accurately called oriental. The rug itself is an imitation. However, oriental is offensive when applied to people because it is an antiquated Western label with overly broad generalization and long standing racist overtones. In the US, the term was used to group different cultures and ethnicities together in order to keep them subordinate under overtly racist laws. The term was selectively applied to discriminate mostly against immigrants from China and Japan and later any people from Asia or Southeast Asia. In contrast, the original definition of the term in Europe included Turkey, India, and regions of Eastern Europe and the Middle East.
