Out of the blue, got an email from Venmo to claim $5. I am not a power user at all, rarely used the site to transer friends/family. It has to be ymmv.
Glad I didn't miss the email.
I was able to claim the $5 and immediately transfer to my bank account.

Looks like they're trying to reel back in infrequent users probably because no one is hanging out anymore so no ones using Venmo!

You can do it from a mobile browser fyi, doesn't have to be via the app. Just refresh the page and you'll have $5 in your balance.

i've used Venmo twice in my entire life. once when a family member couldn't give me the cash b/c of the $300 ATM limit, and once when a friend bought a gaming computer from me and same issue running into the $300 ATM limit. other than that, no need to ever use Venmo nor do i want to ever have to use Venmo. you should never use Venmo for Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. and the easiest way to avoid Venmo, is to just pay for things yourself or bring cash. when i go out, i go to the ATM down the street which allows me to choose denominations of $1, $5, $10, $20, or $50. i type in $39 withdrawal which spits out a $20, $10, $5, and (5) $1's. that is all i need to pay anyone back for a split bill. and it also controls my spending when going out (which isn't happening these days anyways, so again a moot point).
i got the $5.00 promotional email from Venmo probably b/c they want me to use the service more. so i transferred out the $5.00 to my linked checking account and will go back to ignoring that this service even exists
