If it was made for att then it's a sure bet that it's GSM only. The unlock SE I bought at Target came from Verizon. I read that Verizon iPhone work on GMS and CDMA.
That's not how iPhones work. All iPhones sold in Canada and USA, including this SE version (model A2275), can support both GSM and CDMA. However, all new iPhones are initially locked to GSM or CDMA depending on the carrier that's selling them. For example, iPhones for AT&T and T-Mobile are locked to GSM while those for Verizon and (formerly) Sprint are locked to CDMA only. After a few months in active service, you can request the carrier to unlock the phone. Once unlocked, you can use the iPhone on ANY network, GSM or CDMA. This is what makes the phone more valuable. The only caveat is that using the phone in other countries outside Canada and USA may have limited service due to different frequencies supported in that country. (There are two other iPhone models made: one for mainland China (model A2208) and one for the rest of the world (model A2296). Likewise, those phones support different frequencies that may have limited service if used in the USA and Canada.)

I'm currently on ATT 1 year prepaid plan and it is about to expire next month. I would like to retain my number as well. If I purchase and activate new sim can I use my current sim by throwing new sim away?
Yes, you can..

Don't worry about limited service due to frequencies. That is the modem inside the phone and the modem is the same. If you can unlock it, it is a full blown phone and will work everywhere and on all frequencies supported by the internal modem.

Purchased two from the same store, right after each other today at the same location. 1st phone rang up 50+50+tax. Did everything the same, second phone range up 150+50+tax. I think it has to do with the sticker they scan on the back of the phone. My guess is the label identified one of them as a gen 1 SE.

Other tips to get the deal. Make sure they choose a $50 or greater plan, also you have to swipe a CC for your autopay info or the discount won't apply. The they swipe twice, once at the phone computer for the autopay info, then you actually pay at the register.

So I'm curious: at, say, the actually-listed price of $149 + $50 for a month of prepaid, is this still a good deal compared to other existing options?

(I plan to have this as a second, stay-on-wifi phone)

I wonder how early I should head there to catch someone from the electronic section with access to prepaid activation system....
I went at 7 am to get the 480GB PNY SSD a couple weeks ago. There weren't any electronic employees at all in the electronic section. It was a ghost town. If I need some electronic employees to set up a prepaid account with this phone, I think I will be wasting my time. I don't think they show up that early (7 am).

I'm going to get it and stay on the $50 prepaid if I can find a Walmart that has this.

It's 40 with autopay, not 50.

No, the unactivated price is 349. There's a $200 discount if you activate and provide auto pay credit card in store.

Can I use the phone on a regular AT&T plan? Even, after activating the phone on a prepaid plan?
