My card was not charged for the first swipe. I believe it just stored the data and loaded it for the auto-pay. It was performed at the wireless terminal. The transaction then must be taken to the checkout stand where you pay.

I talked to the CSR before I left and asked him the same. Because I bought the second phone for a family member. He said you have to log in to your account and deactivate the autopay on the accounts or you will be charged $50 each month, even if you do not use the service. So definitely deactivate the reoccurring payment on both phones. You do not have to use the sim but you did pay for a month of service and it does have hotspot. So if you choose you could use it or put it in another phone as a hot spot for a month. Just make sure you deactivate the autopay.

The first swipe is for autopay second swipe is for payment of the phone and one month plan. Make sure you log into the account and deactivate the reoccurring payment or you will be charged for a second month and so on.

Say what you will about pricing, customer service, etc. You can't really dispute that generally speaking AT&T has the best wireless network. Verizon may have the biggest (but it's close) but their capacity is trash. T-Mobile is making improvements but they're not there yet. FirstNet was a coup and it will make the network the best for years to come!

Can I do $25 monthly for the remaining 5 months to unlock? And I can cancel after 1st swipe is price is not $100 total?

AT&T shows on their web site that a prepaid phone needs to be active for 6 months before they will unlock it.

Before you submit your unlock request, make sure you meet these requirements:
Your AT&T device isn't reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud.
You purchased your device with an installment or term agreement and:
You've had active AT&T service for at least 60 days.
You completed your contract (including paying any early termination fees) or paid off your installment agreement at least 24 hours before your unlock request.
You have AT&T service and no past due or unpaid balances.
Your device isn't active on another AT&T account.
You waited at least 14 days after an early upgrade to unlock your old device (30 days if you have a business account).
Your AT&T PREPAID®device has been active for at least 6 months.
