Man I wish your statement was true. Having worked with a fleet of several thousand Apple laptops I can tell you, this is simply not true. Macbooks still have failures outside the typical warranty, just like any other large manufacture like Dell, HP, and Lenovo. From swelling batteries in iPads, to failing keyboards, to logic boards failing causing random kernel panics and crashing, Apple products can suffer the same problems. The only difference is the repair cost...

If you have a logic board issue, which can and does happen, you're looking at $400-$1000 depending on the model/specs of the laptop. You might get "lucky" and have a failure before the one year warranty expires, but if you're unlucky, you'll end up paying far more than the cost of the Apple Care +.

So to those considering Apple Care + for your products, as much as I hate to pay Apple more money, it's usually worth the insurance, especially for laptops.

In fairness to Apple and Costco, this isn't a warranty issue. The damage was due to user error, similar to dropping a phone and breaking it.

So costco warranty will cover manufacturing defects and Apple care will cover accidents. Up to each to evaluate if they need

With Costco's doubling of the warranty to two years, and two more years when using their Citicard to purchase, I suppose half price seems fair considering the main advantage of Applecare would be for accidents.

I've noticed that Costco's Square Trade warranties run lower too (likely for the same reason).

Does citi card still provides that additional warranty? I thought they had stopped the program

Hi, looking to buy the Apple Air for 850, with 50% off it will cost additional 100 for the AppleCare. Since I'll be buying with the Costco visa, can you please give me an opinion on whether or not I should spend the 100 on AppleCare?

thanks in advance.

Citi removed the 2 years added warranty from several of their cards- but it's still there on a number of other cards (including the costco one, as well as most of their annual fee cards)

Makes zero sense. You get free 2 year warranty from COSTCO, plus another 2 years from a COSTCO Citi credit card...so 4 years for free. When would you buy Apple warranty by paying extra and for a period that overlaps with the free warranty you receive?

Worst advise ever on SD given this promo. You are getting a $249 warranty for $99. Citi then gives you years 4 and 5.

There is no 2 year Costco warranty. Costco offers a satisfaction guarantee subject to their limitations for certain items such as select electronics, computers and appliances, etc. Apple offers a manufacturer warranty. AppleCare enhances and extends that warranty to cover additional things such as tech suppport and damage/loss (some plans). The Costco Citi Visa extends the manufacturer warranty for an additional 2 years and that 2 year period starts at the end of the manufacturer warranty or any purchased warranty (such as AppleCare), whichever comes last. The maximum warranty is 7 total years combined. Therefore if you purchase AppleCare and it lasts 1 year then you would get 2 more years on top of that if you purchase with your Citi Visa.

I purchased a MacBook Air for my teen daughter less than a year ago. I got a good deal and paid around $850 for it. I did not purchase the Apple care warranty under the false assumption that the first year was covered by either Apple or Costco or my CC.

My daughter closed the lid with something in between the lid & case and put a tiny crack in the glass. The video on the MacBook no longer works and there are vertical lines and the screen blanks out after a few minutes.

I called Costco Concierge service and they were very nice. They transferred me to Apple who made an appointment for me at the Apple store. When I went to the Apple store the guy looked at it and quoted nearly $500 to fix the screen. The first year Apple warranty does not cover cracks in the screen. It will cost almost $500 to fix an $850 computer. Credit card warranty does not cover cracked screen.

My advice is to purchase a warranty that specifically covers accidental damage to the laptop. The free first year Apple covers almost nothing.
