I don't know what people at complaining about a locked phone for 30 months. 70-80% of people these days will keep a phone 3 years. People are holding onto phones longer and longer.

And the people like me who like to buy new phones every year. I will just resell a locked phone for $500 in 10 min after I post on Facebook marketplace for a phone I got $1000/1100 one year ago. As long as you don't get greedy and try to resell it for $700 like I see others. Sell it for reasonable price or heck. U can get $500 trade in credit from Apple directly after one year.

Use the $500 and buy a full price 2021 model iPhone next year.

You are still
Coming out away with what amounts to a $550-600 "credit" assuming iPhone 8 is valued at $150-200

Looking for clarification or data point on successful trade-in of phone (iphone X in my case) with cracked screen.

Value estimator still shows $100 when selecting NO for screen in-tact question, which should satisfy the > $95 requirement for full $800 offer.

The reference to "AT&T Trade-in Program requirements" aren't further detailed - but I do NOT see any mention of "good working condition" as I've seen on other offers.

Eligible Trade-in Smartphones for $800/700 Max Bill Credit:
Must meet AT&T Trade-in Program requirements and have a minimum trade-in value of $95.

edit: Did find mention of good working condition near top of offer. maybe I'll spring for a cheap LCD replacement and give that a shot at trade-in.

I'm concerned that AT&T will not honor the $800 bill credit when you go through the online trade in program especially when they only valued a iPhone X for $225. How does AT&T know you are getting this promotion?

Is there a step missing that I'm not aware of.
1. Buy phone through Apple with AT&T as the carrier.
2. Select installment plan.
3. Answer "No" when asked about trade-in through Apple.
4. One week later you get the phone from Apple, activate it then go to AT&T trade in link to trade in the phone or through an email they sent?
5. Mail it in or turn it into Corporate AT&T store.

I did steps 1-3 so far, and my phone will arrive on 10/23.

I just received an email today from apple.com, which stated in part:

Within 30 days of powering on your new iPhone, trade in your eligible smartphone* directly with AT&T online at tradein.att.com or at an AT&T Store near you. Make sure to use code "TRADEINOFFER20" when you trade in.

^ This is how it distinguishes your trade in as part of this promotion.

I intend to trade in an eBay iphone 8 into store (avoid the horror stories of mail in trading in) and keep my iphone x as a back up.

Best bet is to take into a corporate store for evaluation and, hopefully for you, successful trade-in.

I don't about the 30 months. I care about being forced to switch to a monthly plan that'd raise my bill $35 a month permanently in order to get a temporary $26.67 monthly credit.

Nothing is forced. You choose to buy a subsidized iPhone 12 in this deal.

Or you can choose to buy from Apple, get trade in credit for your old phone, and not upgrade your plan to 5G.

I'm going with C- buy unlocked from Apple, keep current plan, and sell my old phone (iPhone X 256GB) for about double what Apple is offering for it.

Here are the notes I received from Apple (received today) on the trade-in offer after I ordered from Apple's site yesterday:

Congratulations on your new iPhone. Because you've purchased at Apple with an AT&T Installment Plan, you may be eligible for the AT&T Special Trade-in Offer. Here's what to do next to get the offer:

Before you power on your new iPhone, confirm you're on an eligible AT&T data plan. You can contact AT&T or use the myAT&T app. If your data plan is not eligible, you can upgrade your plan anytime before powering on your new iPhone.
Within 30 days of powering on your new iPhone, trade in your eligible smartphone* directly with AT&T online at tradein.att.com or at an AT&T Store near you. Make sure to use code "TRADEINOFFER20" when you trade in.
Your trade-in value will be applied to your AT&T bill in the form of monthly credits. These monthly bill credits will begin to be applied within three billing cycles, and will continue for the remainder of your AT&T Installment Plan term**.

If you have any questions about the offer or about the trade-in process, please contact AT&T online or call 1-800-288-2020.

Once the phone is paid off, you can get the phone unlocked. To do so is a legal requirement in the United States.

If you preorder online, can you still trade the phone in instore? Will they be available normally without having to preorder? Anyone have any idea how long this deal lasts?

Anyone notice this from Reddit? A rep says if you keep the phone for 30 days and wants to pay it off in full early, you'll continue to get the monthly credit. However, you will loose out on it if you upgrade, change or cancel your plan.
