TP-Link Archer AX50
The best Wi-Fi router
In our tests the TP-Link Archer AX50 created a speedy, responsive network even from across a medium house. You have to spend a lot more on a router—or a mesh kit if you have a very large home—to get anything even a little better. It's our first WI-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router pick.

The TP-Link Archer AX50 is reasonably priced, yet it can handle a growing selection of laptops and smart devices while surpassing the performance of routers that cost twice as much. It's generally speedy and able to reach long range, it has little lag even when the network is busy, and it's a great choice if you have a high-performance internet service plan. It's compatible with Wi-Fi 6, the latest wireless standard, and it comes with built-in security in the form of a lifetime subscription to updates.

TP-Link Archer AX20
If our main pick is unavailable
The Archer AX20 offers fewer features than our pick for a slightly lower price, but in most cases it can keep up in throughput, responsiveness, and ease of setup.

If our pick is out of stock or its price is more than $30 higher, you should consider the TP-Link Archer AX20 instead. The AX20 looks like the AX50 and offers a strong, responsive network that's nearly as good, especially if your house isn't larger than our 2,300-square-foot-test home. But it's not quite as fast at longer ranges, and TP-Link sacrifices a few advanced features and settings in its administration interface to meet the lower price

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE:

1. Donknows has a review on the AX3000 (Archer AX 50) this has thoroughly been discredited on this thread.

Quote from PeteyTheStriker :
As was mentioned by me and a few others, that DONGKNOWS review is poorly done. It is not an apples to apples comparison, he used a router with a brand new firmware comparing to an identical router with firmware over 6 months old which had major problems just like any other router around that time. It takes time to work out the bugs and TP-Link, Netgear, Asus to name a few all put out routers with bugged performance with their first set of Wifi 6 routers. So yeah..... Important to make apples to apples instead of reading something without understanding the testing. If he did it the correct way he would have had both side by side on the same firmware.The routers are identical outside USB 3.0 port and Homecare included on one, so you will get identical performance results with the same firmware.

2. CAT7, a CAT 6 or CAT5e cable is needed for gigabit Ethernet. Most cables made for the last 10 years are already 5e, so just saying that cables are usually never a bottleneck.

What is the best gigabit router under $100 these days? I already have dedicated AP and just looking for something I can do gigabit, easy vlan, and be able to monitor what devices are taking most bandwidth.

Thanks in advance!

I read the "Dongknowstech" review mentioned above stating the AX 50 (AX 3000) outperforms the AX 3000 variant from Walmart. In checking the differences, the only things I see are that the AX 50 has additional security/access management software, and it has a USB 3 port versus the AX 3000's USB 2 port. I researched the TP-Link website, and the data sheets for each are essentially identical with the exception of the above, and some international certification for the AX 50, which apparently is an international version. All other specifications appear to be identical. Investigating further, I see the firmwares available for the two units are different in name and size. Dong Published his review on May 4, 2020. Since that time, TP-Link has released a new firmware for the AX 3000 updated May 19, 2020, with the following stated features:

New Features/Enhancement:
1. Improved the performance and stability of wireless;
2. Optimized the stability when working with Tether APP.
Bug Fixed:
1. Fixed some compatibility issues with some AX smartphones;
2. Fixed some compatibility issues with Surface pro.

For comparison purposes, the AX 50 received a firmware update on April 3, 2020, with the following stated features:

New Features/Enhancement:
1. Improved the performance and stability of wireless;
2. Optimized the stability when working with Tether APP.
Bug Fixed:
1. Fixed some compatibility issues with some AX smartphones;
2. Fixed some compatibility issues with Surface pro.

Conclusion:

The AX 50 and AX 3000 compared by Dong may have had different firmware, thus explaining the difference in performance. Since the review, it appears the AX 3000 (Walmart variant) received a firmware upgrade the AX 50 may have received before the comparison testing. I'm rationalizing, because I just purchased the Walmart variant to replace a dying router. Here's hoping.
Thank you for your research and logical approach to understanding this.

1) How easy or difficult was it for you to update the firmware? Did you use the TP Link app for it? What are the steps to upgrading the firmware?

2) Do you know hat the $99 AX1800 also seems to have "Ax 20" on Amazon's web site but not on the Walmart website.

Dongs review was not well done. He compared an identical router but did not do a side by side, he used old numbers. So there was no way to account for the countless firmware performance fixes that happened over that period of time. They are identical routers so the difference in my opinion was firmware fixes.

The proper way to compare both routers would have been to have both of them running side by side on the same firmware, not comparing a router with latest firmware to a router running ancient firmware from when the routers were first released, that makes a night and day difference. So overall that review is a fail.

B&H $119 price is for a refurbished unit! It is $149 at B&H for a "new" unit. Walmart has the best price.

It drops devices and sometime reboot the whole 2.4 GHz band. Frankly, my next upgrade will be a mesh wifi-6 . I am waiting for the black friday deal for them. Another thing to note for the wifi-home-automators, if you don't want your love ones to pull their hair from wifi dropping, make sure they are using the 5 GHz .
Ah, thanks for that input. My desktop in the basement, which is using an external USB antenna, has been dropping fairly frequently lately, and I'm fairly certain that it's on the 2.4GHz band. I just bought a 50' CAT6 cable that I'll have to drill through the floor into the crawlspace to connect, but I'll try 5Ghz first. I may end up doing the cable anyway (I have to run speaker wires when I do get around to it), but that should help. Repped!

New York Times is trash. I do not go there for technical reviews. I have owned some TP-link products in the past. I'll have to research the reviews on your product listings from a more reputable source. Thanks for the heads up.

My free one is modem only. I think router/wifi advance at different pace, so most on their approved list nowadays are modem only. If you have more than one provider in the area, you could probably talk them out of equipment lease,
