How does the trade-in credit work?

Apple trade-in credit
When you trade in with Apple, you'll get an estimated trade-in value. If you pay monthly, that value will be applied as an instant credit to lower your monthly payments. If you pay in full, your payment method will be credited after your trade-in is received.
T-Mobile/Sprint trade-in credit

If your trade-in doesn't match the condition described, or isn't an eligible device, you will no longer qualify for the T-Mobile Special Trade-in Offer. However, Apple Trade In will provide a new value for your device. You'll have the option to either accept this revised value or reject it. 2) If you don't want Bill credits, BE PATIENT. Costco will have an offer soon if they don't have one already that will usually mirror T-Mobiles direct offer except with a prepaid card instead. Will beat Apple's crappy offer.

Based on that, they quote you $415.
If they receive the phone and discover any of those aren't true, then they can lower the amount.
Apple does the exact same thing for their trade ins except are even more stringent (both sides of phone can't be cracked while for T-Mobile only the front can't be cracked).
