1. The product was bad from the time I purchased it. Also, I hardly held on to it "forever", as you state in an accusatory manner. It was barely expired a few days before.
2. There is absolutely nothing in their return policy about a product having to be unexpired to return it. Here is their return policy, right from their website, quoted verbatim:

See anything in there about expired or unexpired product? No, I didn't think so. In fact, it says "Risk Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee", doesn't it? I don't think there's much room for misinterpretation in that sentence. They state clearly the few exceptions to this policy. It really doesn't matter what you think or what I think. It's there in black and white. Also, it's not like I returned food items every day, in fact it was one of the maybe 2 or 3 edible items I've ever returned to them in many years of membership. I had a good reason to do so. Just because I didn't do it immediately has no bearing on the issue, or the guarantee. The manager also agreed with me and refunded my money, over-riding the cashiers knee-jerk decision. Case closed.I like costco but hate lines. I have both memberships.
