There are better hardware in IdeaPad 3 models with Ryzen 5 4500U. However, if you don't need that extra power and prefer a bit better build quality (part metal), IPS Display, Backlit Keyboard etc, then this one worth considering.

We have the Ryzen 5 version of this IdeaPad S340 laptop from last season's Lenovo deal. Can't recall the exact $, but somewhere close to this. The DW absolutely LOVES it! Lightweight, very thin generous screen and skinny bezel, super fast bootup, VEGA graphics, and backlit keyboard that she can actually see (she can't see the backlit keyboard on my souped up HP Envy heavyweight Kluge at all due to poor contrast between the key color and the print). We use a memory manager to overcome the S340's somewhat miserly 8 GB memory, and may eventually get around to adding more but don't really need to. It would also benefit from an additional USB port since ours has only two.
Nevertheless, as the first non-Intel cheapy laptop we've ever bought, we are amazed at how nice it looks and how well it works - and VERY happy that we took a chance. We will very likely buy another when the time comes.
Thanks again, OP!! Repped as always for your good work!
I'm always confused why companies gimp their models...12gb max RAM... Why? If this was a Chromebook, I'd definitely buy it, but Windows hogs resources like crazy. Good deal for some, but not for all. Repped.

That is the maximum Ram Lenovo offers that model with, not the maximum capacity. Ryzen 7 3700U supports 32GB of memory and you can add another 16GB stick by replacing the 4GB user accessible module to have total of 20GB Ram. the 4GB soldered + 4GB portion of the 16GB module will run in Dual channel and the rest of the 12GB will run in single channel which is called Hybrid Dual Channel Mode or Flex Mode.
Don't get confused with those artificial Max Ram capacity. For last 6 to 7 years, manufacturers never restrict the max Ram capacity in Laptops artificially and it is always driven by the max Ram support by the CPU and the available memory slots.
Normally those ratings you see in the manufacturing websites are either the maximum Ram configuration they sell the model with or a capacity (in cases of Desktops) considering the available Ram modules X the common size of the available Rams.
For example, in lot of Desktops from Dell like Vostro, Inspiron or XPS, you will see max Ram capacity is 32GB as those SFF Desktops having 2 Ram slots and the 32GB is derived by the most common 16GB DDR4 module. However, almost all the modern Desktop Processors support 64GB Ram and if you use two 32GB stick, you can easily get 64GB.
Which is better this one or the one with i5 processor for $10 cheaper
This one is better. 3700u is slightly more powerful in multi-threaded performance than i5-1035G1 but the Vega 10 in 3700u is twice faster than G1 graphics.
Would you guys recommend this to replace my Lenovo Yoga 720-12ikb? I primarily use it for everyday browsing + schoolwork +occasional podcasting since I have no room in this apartment for my desktop.

I would. It's actually way more than you need for what you do. But, it's better to have more than you need to allow for future needs. This is a good value, even in the season of black Friday.
