WiFi 6 (802.11ax) operates on both the 2.4GHz & 5GHz channels and is essentially a small upgrade to WiFi 5 (802.11ac). WiFi 6 IS NOT 6GHz, that will be WiFi 6E (although some WiFi 6 routers might be upgradable to WiFi 6e in the future via firmware updates)
Lower frequencies (2.4GHz) provide better wall penetration and range while higher frequencies (5GHz+) provide higher speeds.
For those of you who want to improve your connection quality/range, buy a mesh system. This router will not really improve your connection quality/range (albeit WiFi 6 does increase the 2.4GHz band performance which has good range/wall penetration so you could connect to your 2.4GHz band). There are WiFi 6 mesh systems that take advantage of of the WiFi 6 improvements, or Asus routers w/ AiMesh can double as a mesh network node as well.
WiFi 6 is more geared towards people who have a lot of wirelessly connected devices on their network such as IoT/smart home devices, due to it's improvements like OFDMA and handling a lot of connections efficiently.
tldr:
Buy a WiFi 6 router if you already have a strong connection quality around your home and you want to improve wireless speeds OR if you have a lot of wirelessly connected devices.
Buy a mesh system If you want to improve your connection quality or range around your house.
It is about the band they use (2.4ghz vs 5 ghz). WiFi6 can actually penetrate more than WiFi5 because WiFi6 also supports 2.4ghz. The downside of using 2.4ghz is the oversaturation or dirty air. Also, there are only fewer channels to bond. 5ghz on the other hand is wider. So many available channels to use and to bond. The WiFi6E will make this even better due to more channels being introduced. The downside of 5ghz of course is that it can't penetrate much as the 2.4ghz. However, the penetration and distance difference only matters if you are in an isolated place where 2.4ghz is clean. If you live in a dense area like an apartment, forget about 2.4ghz. You will benefit more on the cleaner Signal to Noise ratio of the 5ghz even through walls.
Also, WiFi6 is better suited for high dense area than WiFi5. I can go on technical on this but in short, WiFi6 is better.
