Yes but you need to shuck it (Meaning take it out of the enclosure and stick it in your NAS)
Oh okay. Thanks. Which means this drive in itself is not NAS, correct? but can be added to the NAS's capacity if you have one going already?

Does anyone know what kind of filesystem is running for the external drive? I would like to connect to both Windows and Mac, NTFS doesn't work with Mac natively for both read and write. Thanks!

No this is not a NAS. This is just an a hard drive you put into your NAS to build up storage.

Yes, you can put it in your NAS if you have an extra slot or replace an old drive to expand storage.

You can either format at extfat to work on both or buy an Myra program such as paragon that lets you write to nerds on your Mac.

Yep. Got it. Thanks for the quick responses. This won't meet my need then. I'm looking for a NAS drive to by-pass the need for a computer to run a Plex media server.

I was in the same place years ago. Thought my Plex server would be fine with a few USB-attached drives, but I'm now up to 14 shucked disks. Here was my process, in case it helps:
(1) At first I bought a PC case [newegg.com] with 8 internal HDD bays. Thought that would last me for a while.
(2) Then I outgrew the PC case so I bought a RSV-L4500 [newegg.com] off Amazon for about $100. To utilize the extra internal drive bays I also bought an LSI HBA pre-flashed to IT mode along with two SAS-to-4xSATA cables. So with this HBA card added to your motherboard you get plug-and-play support for 8 more internal drives.
(3) Then I outgrew the RSV-L4500 (and I got tired of doing 3.3v mods to workaround power issues) so I bought a Netapp DS4246 [ebay.com] disk shelf that supports up to 24 hot-swap drives. I also needed to swap my HBA card for one that includes an external [ebay.com] SAS port to connect to the disk shelf. Then you need a special cable [amazon.com] to connect the disk shelf to the HBA. But again, everything is "plug and play". Note that the disk shelf is not quiet... it came with two redundant 580w power supplies, and it's built for datacenter use so the fans are beefy.

That might be more info than you're looking for, but my point here is that I wish I skipped the RSV-L4500 step and just went straight to the disk shelf. It's so convenient being able to pop a hard drive into the shelf, and not worry about power supply issues or anything like that.

Finally, I use Stablebit Drivepool [stablebit.com] to pool all of my disks into a single "drive". Makes organizing for Plex a breeze. I also enable file duplication on my pool, so I can lose any one disk and have that data automatically migrated and re-duplicated throughout the existing disk pool. Along with their Stablebit Scanner tool, all of my drives are fully scanned once every 30 days, and if it detects an issue it will even email you and start migrating data off the defective drive. It's not an efficient use of space; you can do better with RAID since you only need 1 or 2 disks for parity depending on how you set it up. But I like the simplicity of my setup and I don't mind having to have the extra storage space. I'm sure others feel differently.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
Wow, thanks for the detailed reply! Definitely gives me a good launching off point! I also realize I have much to learn as I'm going to have to somehow find time to do some extensive research into this. I think 24 bays is a bit overkill for me where I'm currently at, but perhaps a 12-bay system would do the trick and give me some future expansion. I think if I tried to pop that 24 bay into our home office my wife as Martha Stewart incarnate may kill me, lol.

Yeah, at that point you're looking for QNAP or Synology. If you're trying to run a PMS then you want to look at 918+ or 1019+ since it supports transcoding.

Thanks OP. Was able to checkout for 2 of these! Good for either a new NAS/DAS or backup for my current NAS.

If you want to use an advanced filesystem, use ZFS. It works and is stable. Has worked for years.

I would NEVER consider using a FS that has been "work in progress" for a decade. BTRFS was a good theory, but that's it.

With Fedora 33, BTRFS is now the default fstype. I know it had some terrible growing pains early on, was hoping it matured by now that Fedora fully embraced it before I go format 14tb. XFS then on Fedora for this one?

Thanks and that(extfat) is what I thought. I wonder if NTFS is the default filesystem coming with the drive…

Got one, wondering if I should get another - now to return the 12TB I picked up 15 days ago from BB for $175.

Exactly. I didn't even know what shucking was either. Last time I heard of it was when my grandparents were pissed at something they'd say "shucks" instead of 💩
This is hilarious and totally wholesome. I love it. And yeah, I totally relate. Despite being tech-savvy, this whole business of shucking never really appealed to me. It's a whole lot of effort and risk but I understand some people have more time on their hands and also enjoy this stuff. To each his own Smilie
