Ordered 4 for local pickup... The site was being a little wonky for me at checkout for the heads up.

I've been putting off proper management of professional photo/video backups and it looks like I now have my drives. Just need to find an enclosure for them now Smilie
I highly recommend a used super micro chassis. They have excellent power supplies for cheap and you can really put any motherboard in you want but I'd like the remote management of the super micro ones

Purchased two to shuck for a 1st time NAS setup. I would use it to store media/music files and run a plex server. Would someone please recommend a good NAS drive for my needs? TIA!

I definitely appreciate the response... I haven't built a system like this before and while I've done my homework on drives, I haven't completely settled on an enclosure. Do you have a link to the model that you'd recommend?

They have tons of different ones. Mine is a 16 bay with a backplane which you want if you can. Make sure it's sas2. Check out https://www.servethehome.com or www.unixsurplus.com

As stated, most are running illegally downloaded movies/shows. Yes, there are those that actually buy them. You also have a few professional video editors that need the space or content creators.
Knock, knock.

Sorry for the dumb question. Can this be used as NAS to run Plex Meda server without having a need for a computer?

You're incorrect on the 4 bay nas needing 2 drives for redundancy.
Only 1 drive is used for redundancy. You can even mix and match drive sizes when you upgrade later.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/su...calculator [synology.com]

Play with that.

Get a Synology that can use BTFS and configure their hybrid raid. 4x8tb will yield 24tb usable. They have 6bay and 8bay models. I just picked up a 1618+ 6 bay for $500 on amazon warehouse. upgrading my DS416play 4 bay. Off to ebay it goes
Seems I may be a bit out of my league here. Was playing with the slider in that link and raid 0 gives me full use of 88TB of data, while Raid 1 only gives me 8tb? Looks like Rai0 provides no data backup (whats the point, then?) and raid 1 is overkill. Is there something that creates a sort of "image reference" of the data that is compressed, that way maybe I could use like 60% of my available TB's and then 40% is backup of that data compressed? I would say 80% of the data stored is video content, so if a drive dies, I just need to be able to restore the last data, not access it instantaneously.

Yes but you need to shuck it (Meaning take it out of the enclosure and stick it in your NAS)

Snagged 1. Thanks op. Was debating if I should get it. But for the footage storage from my new 8K camera, why not?

Depending on how you mean that, no. These drives will work fine for an existing NAS, but you still need something else to run the plex server on.
