SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

Exactly. I didn't even know what shucking was either. Last time I heard of it was when my grandparents were pissed at something they'd say "shucks" instead of
They do it to oysters too -- probably how it came to be applied to these disks.

Anyone shucking the drive who is simply going to throw the enclosure away, and is in the Minneapolis area, I would be interested in picking up 1 or 2 of these enclosures FOR FREE to keep out of the landfill.

Offering no trade
Zero dollars
A full dollar less than $1

Hopefully that is now clear and complete while no longer being concise ;-)

Thanks much

My HDs are like hermit crabs. Once it's getting close to filling up the capacity, it gets moved to a higher capacity drive. all my data from current drive gets copied on to a bigger newer storage. the new drive replaces and the old one act as a offline backup. Also, I don't feel comfortable once hd gets older than 4-5 years old.

Because these are actually Western Digital Red drives*, retailing for $400+. They're designed to work in a NAS (network attached storage) and enterprise environments.
Kinda. They're whites with unknown firmware as to whether they retain Red qualities.

On black Friday-Cyber Monday Amazon sometimes sells Best Buy Gift cards for up to 20% off. I bought a few last year. These days since Best Buy price matches I don't mind buying and holding a few for some great deals. They may be limited to 1 per customer, but I think they ran this a few times last year and if you have more than one account you can buy them. These were physical cards mailed by Amazon

my LG c9 can play mp4 remuxes through the Plex app. Android (Shield, Sony TV) can now play DV mkv
Methinks you made good choice owning that LG C9 that supports DV now.
Future models will be even more tech specific, thereby limiting. Ie Samsung 2018 and on models no support for Dolby True Surround, Sony runs on different DV.
Though I have one question, have you previously connected to TV directly and play DV remuxes without issues? Heard the GUI lacks a bit, but still better than Plex (direct play sometimes shoddy).
