SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

You can easily tell if you've got an 80" 4K TV. The larger the screen/resolution, the easier it is to see the difference. 40" 4K? Probably. 27" 4K? You're hitting diminishing returns. Many people who run Plex servers are providing content for a more than just themselves, so the more storage prices decrease, the more we err on the side of fidelity.
I have an 86" 4k, remux is the best viewing. Period.

Backups of backups of backups. Redundancy at its finest.

You take out the drives and use them in a NAS in your favorite RAID configuration.

14Tb drives are quite a bit of data to be at the mercy of HD failure...

I guess buying a pair of these and making 1 mirror the other HD is the safest move.

Yeah, each year, the sale is progressing in capacities. This year, we will likely see 16TB on sale, whether it's from WD or Seagate (Seagate ramped up the 16TB before WD). I still have some capacity left on my 10TB drive so will pass on this one and wait for the 16TB. It may be trickier in following years, as we will need to decide whether to choose MAMR or HAMR drives. :-)
They technically already have it "on sale" on their site. I doubt we see a BF type sale on them this year, at least not from BB. They seem to hit these drives in 2 year cycles. Heck they are still doing the 8tb drive each BF and selling a ton of them. Only good sale I see that might happen is coming from WD themselves. They have had some really good ones last year thru the holiday season.

They download tons of movies from the internet in 4k. A lot of the guys I know that do this don't even watch half of what they have stored.

Unlikely these go lower, but it's possible to see a deal on 16TB, hard to tell. Your best bet is to buy now and take advantage on extended holiday return policy and send it back to you do find a better deal through the holidays.

1TB is a lot of data to lose,... Backup is always important. People have been saying "X harddrive is alot of data to lose" since I was buying 20gb drives.
