SHR always uses one drive with the largest capacity for parity, so putting one 14TB in won't get you anything more than what the Synology has now. You will want to buy at least two 14TB drives. Replace one drive, wait for SHR to rebuild, then repeat with the other new drive. You will end up with 2TB more than current. If you were to replace all four 12TB drives, you would end up with 6TB more than current.
The golden question, what's inside?

Extended returns in effect if you're on the fence.

Purchases made October 13, 2020 through January 2, 2021 have an extended return period through January 16, 2021
These won't get lower. BB does this every year, they offer the BF pricing a few weeks ahead of BF and then again at BF. I buy their BF special drives every year and upgrade both my servers and sell off the drives from the year before. It's the exact same scenario every time. This year it's the 14TB. Last year was the 12TB, 10 before that and 8 before that.

Backups of backups of backups. Redundancy at its finest.
You're doing redundancy wrong if it's all on the same drive.

A. store pick up order with Paypal checkout (Paypal 1) ready to pick up
B. ship to home order with Paypal checkout (Paypal 2) in process (payment submitted to Paypal)
C. ship to home order with Paypal checkout (Paypal 1) shipped
D. ship to home order with Paypal checkout (Paypal 2) cancelled
E store pick up order (different store from A) with Paypal checkout ((Paypal 2) cancelled.

I didn't use any VPN when I place the orders. Only order A is placed logging into a BestBuy account. Their fraud detection system will cancel any order it defect any possible issues. Maybe It detected I placed more than 3 orders. Will try again with another Paypal account later today. I like to get 4 units today if possible but I am happy with 2 units and can always wait for the next sales.
I ordered 4x for pickup this morning and bought 1 extra while in store without issue.

I don't know what to tell you. I think my closest local store only had 1 when I placed my pick up order and is probably out of stock for me to purchase additional unit there when I pick up my store pick up order. I asked my brother to order one for me since I don't really want to drive 15 miles to another store just to try my luck.

Update: I just checked and most stores near me already out of stock for store pick up order. Many within 15 miles only have 1 left. Some stores with 3 available are about 25-35 miles away.

So the only real world difference between the white's inside these enclosures and the red/red plus is warranty?
Anyone who has had white label's in their Synology care to speak to their experience?
RED drives use different NAS specific firmware which is more compatible with raid configurations. They rely more on the raid controller to do error corrections instead of trying to do it themselves. This helps them place more nicely with raid. They're also rated for more vibration which allows you to put them in larger NAS arrays. Not a problem for 2-4 disk NAS's, but for larger arrays I would consider a NAS specific drive instead.

Usually sell them locally. Sometimes I put them back in their shells and sometimes I sell as bare drives.
You can unshuck a drive? I thought the shucking part involved breaking plastic tabs and maybe removing the circuit board in some cases?

how much do they sell for - 50% of original price or is it more like 75%?

if you have the right tools and experience from breaking a few of them, you can open one without breaking any tabs. I broke tabs on my first 2 units and didn't break any tabs on the 3rd and 4th of the 8TB/10TB/12TB version.

If you are remotely careful it is pretty easy to shuck them without breaking the case. And the circuit board etc are just held in by screws, so easy to take off and put back one.

Sometimes harddrives die young. It has happened to some number every single model of harddrive ever made. It's not like 1 review means that 100% of the drives fail early.
Mine did that and the hard drive still works..I put my PC stuff on it, so it didnt die, it just would make the clicking sound when idle, only when connected to the xbox, when connected to my pc it doesnt do it at all

Typically yes, if you are careful. Follow the Youtube videos. The good news is that there are no security seals to worry about. Once you've done one the rest are easy.

When trying to use shucked drives on your PC, you sometimes have to use a 4 pin molex to sata power adapter. Newer drive standards have a certain pin that allows them to wake or spindown, which is controlled by the hard drive enclosure controller. Using the 4 pin molex to sata power adapter doesn't have that pin so it allows the drive to stay awake.

Other than that, I never had an issue with shucking drives, other than occasionally breaking tabs on the enclosure.

I bought one of these at the beginning of the month at $229. I'm past the return period and BB chat won't do a price adjustment. Is there anything else I can do or just SOL?
