I'm a n00b woodworking but is the 13" vs the 12 1/2" that much difference on price.

for example
https://www.rockler.com/dewalt-dw734-heavy-duty-12-1-2-thickness-planer-with-three-knife-cutter-head... [rockler.com]

is $469. Which one is a better option?

This is certainly no 5 HP cast iron behemoth. But for a reasonably portable, bench top sized model it works pretty well. I disagree that you can't do thickness planing on it. There are guidelines near the feed in that show depth of cut limits for different width material and I've found if you adhere to those or a little on the conservative side it works great. Sure, if you have a wide piece that you need to take a lot off you will have to do several passes.

It's certainly not perfect. The stock blades are also on the soft side and tend to nick easily which can leave raised lines in your piece. Not a huge issue for me since there would be a number of finishing steps after this for a nice piece or if it's something rough I wouldn't care. Also, if you're not careful about support long pieces feeding in or out you can get some snipe on the first/last 3 or 4 inches or so.

I've had this unit for 2 years and for a hobbyist with limited permanent shop space it's a great tool.

I really want this planer. Has anyone seen it lower before?

How are people getting the 15% coupon from HD? Is there a method that's easy enough and doesn't cost a ton of money?

By all accounts, this one (DW735) is much better. The DS734 is a fine planer, but having used both, the DW735 is better built, gives a better finish, has the built in chip extractor fan with better dust collection in general. Either one will work, but this one is better especially for the price.

It might have been those homeowner online classes is my guess.

Is there a way to get that coupon if you registered for that class but never actually attended? (Not that anyone of us would miss class, of course.)

There's always grabbing a coupon on ebay, not quite as good, but should still save a little money.

Unless I am missing something - nothing about 10%. Maybe you can still get it if you insist?
Used to be the policy. Changed in May according to BigEzee

Curious how folks are getting a price match and using their 15% coupon, I'm being told it is one or the other?

Dudes.

I just made a 72" x 30" hickory top for my covid work from home desk. Some light warping and twisting on the boards. I wish I had this planer. I hand planed it and hated every minute of that experience.

I'm a hobbyist too. The top turned out great, all things considered. Great price, but still way outta my budget Frown
