Particle board. Or any other engineered wood. Is almost always going to be there at this price range.
And that's great news! Imagine how expensive desks would be if your only options were hard wood boards? Engineered wood is amazing stuff and with veneer is the only way to get decent looking furniture at an affordable price for everyone. 9/10 times particle board, mdf, whatever is going to be strong enough for everyone's application unless you plan to literally jump on the desk.
