It is my new mission in life to tell everyone how shitty of a product Arlo is and how much worse of a company they are. Support ticket open for five months, system I cannot log into, support team that doesnt call back as promised, etc.

I switched to Eufy and have never blinked again.
I bought this in the last deal when it was $99. Note that the base does not include a USB port for local storage for that you need to buy another base. Besides that it works very well and has been capturing video of people walking up to the house and a cat that likes to visit my yard.
The wire-free feature is nice but anyone can walk up to your house and just take the camera since it is stuck to the base with a magnet. Netgear says that they will only replace a stolen camera if you have a subscription plan with them and you file a police report.

NewEgg charges $12 for a return shipping label and $22 restocking fee so I decided to keep the Arlo camera.

Personally I like my $15 refurb D-Link 936L better.
Also the Arlo camera can't detect motion behind a glass window. My D-Link camera works fine behind a glass window.
That's what I did. Left spare base in box.

Can I buy it just for an add-on camera? Will it work with my current Arlo system?

Also note that, even if you do use a different base to get local storage, it's limited to activity-triggered recordings and can't be used for manual recordings, per Arlo.

Also, if you want to view your camera via a browser (e.g. on PC) it will time out after a few minutes. And after a few more minutes, it will log you out and you'll need to log back in and click play. There is no "keep me logged in" option. So forget about easily/quickly being able to see your live camera video while, say, doing other work on your computer.

Just a recommendation. I just got rid of these (I had three arlo pro 2s) and got the Eufy Pro 2k deal at best buy ($250 for 2 cams and home base) and the Eufy blows them away in pretty much every way.

And, the Chinese government will analyze your data for free! Stop buying these products from Chinese-owned companies. Why fund China's surveillance state so you can save a few backs and have a clearer picture of your mailbox?
