Are these going to be obsolete once Starlink completes deployment? With their beta unlimited internet at $100/mo, it seems like they should be able to offer a satellite messaging service for next to nothing.
Starlink and Iridium aren't exactly apples to apples. One is high power, high bandwidth. Starlink can replace existing Iridium use-cases like yachts, offshore drilling rigs, etc. You wouldn't be able to use the service in a small handheld with long battery life. Kinda like Wi-Fi versus Bluetooth. Similar idea, different uses, different requirements.

Can I buy, but not activate until later when I actually use it?
Possibly. Not sure how it works with the free month of that is your question, but in general you can activate it during certain time frames if you want to.

I have the mini and actually had to use it a week after I got it for someone outside of my party. There were 2 helicopters on site 1 hour after I sent the SOS - YMMV

Spot X is probably a better value for most depending on your needs.

I have a Spot X. I buy the annual plan which has a nice feature in that you get all of your custom messages up front. So on the basic plan you get all 240 upfront. This allows you to use more some months and less some other months and still not pay for overages. With well thought out predefined messages you can save your custom messages.

Have it. Love it. Now I feel I like overpaid for it. Haha. Great deal for those of us who love the backcountry.
Do you mind describing how you input your text message to send/receive on this Mini unit? It just looks like a tiny display, no keyboard?

Thanks!

Spot trackers dropped in price currently as well. Good to see these are as well. Spot monthly is less, but everyone has different needs. I think this would be better if you are already in the Garmin ecosystem (watch, etc).

I believe you use an app on your phone, or you can select from preset messages on the device.
