What it can do..
- Allows you to send messages via the device or your phone paired with bluetooth
- Allows tracking / checkins... useful for loved ones at home that want to check your progress on a trail, they can request your location from the web portal and it pings the device.
- SOS option you can use as an emergency "911" device, even in the middle of BFE
- There are some limited trail marking / navigation options on the device, it's good for maybe set a waypoint at your car and be able to navigate back that way if you get too far off track, or your deer stand etc.
You will need a subscription either monthly or annual, I personally think the monthly is a better value. It's like a 20% premium or so, but I only backpack once every month and some of the trails I know have good cell coverage so wouldn't need on those so plan on only using this device 2-3 months out of the year ( which if I NEED it one time it pays for itself ).

- Preset messages. You can setup 3 preset messages ahead of time either on the app or on the website. You also pre-define the recipients. These messages be sent at any time by scrolling though them on the device itself. These messages can also carry GPS coordinates which make it easy for doing "starting hike/stopping hike/checking in" type messages. You can send an unlimited number of these messages on all of the plans.
- Custom messages. The device pairs via bluetooth and you can use the app on your phone to send a custom message. You can also select the recipient and if you want to include your coordinates or not. These are used more sparingly than preset messages. Most plans will come a certain number of these types of messages included (the cheapest ones have 10, the more expensive plans are unlimited).
I have this device and have my presets set to "Starting Hike", "Stopping Here" and "Plans changed, will follow up". All messages go to my wife and include my coordinates. I use the first one when starting my hike or after a long break, use the second when stopping for lunch or setting up camp and then only use the third if there's some major change in plans like an injury or weather change. This lets he know to wait for another custom message explaining what's going on.There's also an SOS feature that you can activate and it will notify Garmin and, if required, dispatch search and rescue. They will also call your emergency contact and notify them of what's going on.

They have a month-to-month plan, I just turn it on if I'm going to be outdoors much that month, and turn it off the rest of the time. Costs me about ~$15/month + $25/year.
One more thing, for another... $25/year you get rescue insurance up to a few hundred thousand, though some places don't charge for rescues.
All in all, a pretty small price to pay for peace of mind, and maybe your life.
