I bought an open box like new Magic Keyboard but returned it and got the Smart Keyboard Folio instead; I'm using it to type this reply right now. The Magic Keyboard is very nice, but you can't use it in portrait mode: it opens just wide enough to use in landscape made. The hinge is quite stiff and the keyboard (which serves as a base) is relatively heavy: they both have to be this way for the Magic Keyboard to hold the iPad up the way it does. Using 2 hands to get it open is a requirement; that's almost true with the Smart Keyboard Folio too. The backlight is really nice, but with being able to keep the Folio on while using the iPad in portrait mode and saving $100+, I was ok with losing the backlight and trackpad. Also, the trackpad feels a little small. If I wanted to use the iPad in landscape mode all the time, I would have kept the Magic Keyboard. There's a Logitech case with backlit keyboard and you can keep on for portrait mode, but it has a kick out stand at the back which looked flimsy and made lap usage look tenuous at best. These are the things that I wish I knew before purchasing (temporarily) a Magic Keyboard. I'm happy with the Smart Keyboard Folio; yes, it's still a bit pricey, but a physical keyboard that uses the smart connector and can stay on while in portrait is worth it to me. The Magic Keyboard is really nice though; I can see why the people that have them really like them.

Not saying it's the best idea to get pros for younger kids vs regular iPads but I use to work IT in K-12, (during huge budget cuts that were deemed unconstitutional later on). If you bought every student in a grade a device and had them keep it for 4-6 years it is only about $100-150 a year for a device. They are pretty much using the device every day so I say that's a good investment. Don't get me started on school districts that spend multi million dollars on stadiums though...

I want something that I can use as a keyboard or a tablet without having to keep taking it apart everywhere I go, so for me this is way more useful than the Magic Keyboard. I've used these for the last two iPads I've owned and now bought this for my 12.9, and it's even BETTER than the previous ones because you can use it on your lap (although...it's a bit flimsy when using on your lap, still better than nothing and I don't use it this way a lot).

I have the 3rd Gen, but it's basically the same. It's okay on the lap, but since the bottom isn't that heavy then it might tip over given that I have the 11inch so I can't speak about the heavier 12.9. I do like typing on it since it feels good to type on even if it isn't like a traditional keyboard. One thing I wish it had is for it to be backlit.
