We'll see if it works out. Either it will, or it won't. If it doesn't, I won't loose anything beyond the 5 minutes of work it took to do this. And, I really need a low balance, no fee checking account anyway to link to my Paypal account in place of my main bank account.

And then what if you're doing it for kids under 18 with no ID?
I DID manually input the promo code BONUS400 during the application. It was at the step of "Add external transfer account". However, I also chose "I'll fund it later". I didn't check whether the promo code is there at the final step/page though. I called their customer service number (877-383-4802), and they told me that they couldn't see the promo code for my account. Plus, after I logged into the Capital One account, it asked me to finish setup by adding an external account. This is where I got stuck: they asked me to input my number, and then told me "the phone number doesn't match your name". I had to call the above number again, and they had to manually add the external account for me.
Called them three times. My third call was actually transferred to a manger (called Chelsea) to solve my issue. Chelsea added a note to my account and asked me to call Capital One again on April 1 to ask for the $400 bonus.
My personal guess is that the promo code wasn't applied because I didn't add the external transfer account during my application. I chose "fund it later". Therefore, if you want to avoid the headache I experienced, input the promo code and ADD an external transfer account DURING the application!!
If you already completed your application, CALL the 877 number to confirm that the promo code is applied to your account., If not, ask them to add a note for you, so you may call them again on April 1 (dude, this is a good date!) to get the $400 bonus!!
Never had a Capital One account before. This experience is surely not pleasant.
