I never understood why stores leave real gift cards out in the open for people to tamper with. Lock the real ones up and put paper dummies out on the shelves. It's 2020, scams like this shouldn't exist.
Because it costs them nothing but shelf space and locking them up discourages people from buying them. It honestly has no value and They get good margins on third party gc. Imo, the blame goes to the vendor. Most of the times gc are restocked by someone that doesn't work there like greeting cards, soda and chip products. They should be checking these out and rotating them often, well unless they are part of the scam.

FYI, for anyone who's trying to use these cards to pay for something in store, be a repair, or product. Don't redeem the cards to your account. I just learned this the hard way and am now trying to figure out how I can get one of my $100 cards unlinked from my Apple ID. I took my MacBook Pro in tonight for a battery replacement that costs $200. I bought two of these gift cards for this reason. When I got the email I immediately went to the link to view the card number and figure out how to add it to my wallet app. Clicking the hyper link redirects you to the iTunes Store and automatically adds the card to your Apple ID balance after a Face ID scan. I wasn't quick enough to turn my phone away. You cannot use an Apple ID balance to pay for in store items. This was confirmed by the store manager and multiple people in the store. So while I'm waiting for my repair to be completed I have to figure out how I can get this resolved. I've also possibly learned target didn't send me an everything Apple gift card but potentially a iTunes / App Store gift card as the number starts with an X, these cards cannot be used in store. So I'm gonna contact apples gift card department tomorrow and then possibly target next if this is the case. Very frustrated with all this. And now reading the comments looks like I might have to worry about fraud next. Should've just paid the $200 been done.
How is this Apple's problem? You loaded a physical gift card to a digital account and you walk into a physical store to pay? Use the funds to pay for cloud or netflix subscription through Apple at 20% off.

This has been mentioned hundreds of times on SD of what you can and can't do on every Apple gift card post.

Your situation sucks for sure, but it wouldn't have happened if you had read all 1000 posts in this tread or searched previous threads. Had you asked in this thread someone would have answered and many others would have down voted you probably. Lesson learned.

Maybe add to the wiki to help others too hard to find this so deep in the thread.

BUYER BEWARE
-------------------------------------------------------

Long time lurker - one of my times posting, but this has gotten me so mad....MadMadMadMadMad

I bought over 10pcs of the $100 apple gift cards and only 1 of them worked. The rest were already redeemed before I returned home to use them. Some data points:
- Similar to Yong0644, I purchased them in a Target store in the greater San Diego area. Others were scammed in NJ and San Jose based off what I can tell
- I called Apple. The rep was able to check the value of other cards without ripping the seal. Same situation as others. Money is gone so Apple can't do anything or provide additional info due to legal reasons. A case was created for investigation.
- I called Target Relations (1-800-275-2273 --> Option 4 then 3 then 2. Was told I needed to speak to a "gift card specialist" but they're closed for the night. Will call again tomorrow
- As far as I could tell, the normal shopper will not be able to tell the difference between the ones that have been tampered with. Looking back at them, they all look geniune.
- Planning on filing a police report at the store if they cannot refund tomorrow
- Tried finding all the other mentions of this scam/fraud in the thread and quoted them below as additional data points. I'm sure I'm missing people though.

Honestly, I fully blame Target. My suspicion is a group of people at Target are accessing the codes and re-sealing the gift cards.

Question for the community:
1) I saw some posts about the online codes as well. Does anyone have trouble redeeming the $100 Apple gift card if sent electronically?
2) Any help from those affected would be greatly appreciated. This is only the surface and I'm sure many more are affected who don't even realize they've been robbed.

Thanks in advance,
Did the sealing tape look intact and the same as the one on untampered Apple gift cards?
I've bought a few (luckily they were fine) and I noticed that Apple created this fancy, elegant package that is different from other gift cards. The envelope is sealed by some special tape but there is no protection on the card itself. And the thing after you open it, the envelope still looks pretty much intact. You can simply seal it up again with a larger tape (maybe some unusual colored tape, not regular Scotch tape), then people might not be able to tell it's been opened unless you already know how the original tape looks like.

I will tell you that apple employees, including Senior Applecare advisors are not yet up to speed on all the "nuances" of the apple account payment.

There is ZERO excuse that apple does not have a way to load your digital balance to your "wallet" app (yes they should force 2FA to do allow this over say $100).

Also, you can not pay to add a two year applecare+ plan with your balance at all and with the physical gift card unless you are in a physical store. You can subscribe and pay for months 2- ?? of applecare with your digital balance.

Also, as noted above you can only pay for a repair with a physical card and only in store.

Bought 15 cards in store and no issues.

Be sure to check back to make sure secure tab is sealed. Also, ask manager for Apple Card's from the back. They store ones in safe place. Let them know you are concerned with fraud.

Good luck.

Assuming you're treating the $20 like cash, you're getting 16.67% off, not 20%.

20% would be if they were only charging you $80 for a $100 gift card. You're paying $100 for $120.

Edit: Unless you're including the Red Card 5% off, in which case it's more like 21%

I purchased multiple $100 apple GC online Sunday and in store Monday. Luckily all of the ones I purchased in store were the "newer" version with the security pull tab seal. I can see how the entire seal could be removed and replaced and a new different seal easily applied and I would have had no idea. So make sure when buying in store that it has the official apple seal, I guess you would have to Google to see an image if you don't know what they are supposed to look like, and that someone could still have access to these seals and reapply them in their scam.

My online codes I had the same issue as you. I think I have read every post in this thread and have not seen anyone else mention it, so to the person that attacked you back off not everyone knows all of the ins and outs of the different types of apple gift cards. I redeemed mine on my iPad Pro on iOS 14 and when I tapped the Target link it opened a Blackhawk website and when I clicked on redeem it did exactly like yours launched iTunes and loaded it my account. What is worse I did this twice until I realized what was going on. Luckily I was buying a new Apple Watch series 6 Nike 44mm with trade in so apple was the best deal for me. I was able to use that balance and combine it with the gift card codes manually typed in online, but I had thought I just wasted $200 on software and subscriptions.

One possible option I saw that may work for you is using your iTunes credit to purchase and send yourself a new electronic giftcard but not sure if that would be allowed to be used in store. Maybe that "friendly" now it all guy could chime in.

Eh, my gift cards stars with and X and they specifically say:

"Use the Apple Gift Card to get products, accessories, apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more. Spend it on in-app content, books, subscriptions and even iCloud storage to secure files from all your Apple devices. This gift card does it all. And then some.

The Apple Gift Card can be used two ways:

1. For online purchases, go to apple.com/redeem to add to your Apple Account balance.
2. Bring this email to any Apple Store location."
