R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

It would still be locked to Cricket unless you stay with them longer, 6 months I think

Or they could always use an R-SIM, no?

I would've jumped on any one of those deals if the screen wasn't a tad too small for today's phones.

Yes - you could get 2 and then the net cost could be lower as they drop the monthly plan to $30 for the second line instead of $60

Can you explain more on this? I've no idea what is r-sim and what's the relation with locked cricket phones

Pretty great coming right off the heels of the iPhone 8 offer from Cricket which was 128GB also for $50 with port in less than 2 months ago. These Cricket iPhone deals are great for kids at home, apps l, music, watching, camera, iMovie, Garageband, quality games, etc.

There is a referral program from Cricket. It's possible that you can refer yourself from your old account and also you can try to "advertise" your referral link to others then actually maybe you can get several more months for free. For example, if you just referral from your old account, you will get $25 credit in your new account. Then you only need to pay $95 to get it unlocked. But if there are 4 more people to click your referral link, then actually you can unlock it for free. You just need to wait 180 days to get it unlocked.

Agreed - I scored 4 of the iPhone 8's for exchange purposes at Costco for iPhone 12 pro max. I unfortunately wasn't able to score on this deal because it's detecting that I got the promo price less than 180 days ago
