R-SIM is a SIM card add-on that looks like a really thin SIM card that mounts on top of your nano sim (or below depending on the model) that allows you to bypass the sim lock by hard coding a new ICCID that is unlocked.

You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.

It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.

Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.

back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.
As long as you have an old Sprint SIM card laying around (they're reusable)... and an IMEI from a phone that's compatible with Sprint's network, you can sign up for the $5 service (data only) or if you want to play it safe... $6 service (500mb data, 100 min). Pay for service, enter in IMEI and SIM card info, activate. You'll have instant access to a new phone number, pin to access port out info.
I bought 2 already. total cost $196 for 2 phones. trade in value of SE at apple is $210

You would just create another account with a different email and refer yourself for the $25 credit. Same billing is fine if you haven't bought tons of Cricket phones this year.
Do you know if Cricket imposes a limit on how many phones you can get over a certain time period? I ordered several phones from Cricket recently via port-in promos that I haven't activated and don't plan to activate (gave these phones as an upgrade to relatives who are existing Cricket customers). Wondering if I can order more phones like this after waiting for the un-activated lines to drop off my account.

Can I use this as a trade in device on apple site?
Yes you can.

I just ordered one, Cricket service is actually pretty good and their online account management is also very good. Thanks OP! (Even better, I'm porting in a # that I needed to transfer out of the current service anyway!)

For the 6 month unlock requirement - does it have to be a continuous 6 month period, or can I stop service after the included month is up, and buy service for another 5 months later on before unlocking?

I would've jumped on any one of those deals if the screen wasn't a tad too small for today's phones.
Agree.. that's the only thing stopping me from trading in my x for an SE. with these great deals lately, I'd gladly pay 50 more dollars if they had an SE Plus or something with a bigger screen and the same performance/look.

Possibly 4 phones over 180 days based on my discussion with the OP

My Total wireless iPhone SE is due to arrive Saturday via FedEx hmm. That deal price of phone was $100 more but included $25 more in CB and $55 more in referral credit so $80 in savings, but still making this deal $20 cheaper. Also this deal unlocks after 6 months Vs TW 1 year. I am porting in from Tello and use around 4 GB of data per month so the $30 plan won't work for me.
I don't think the plan card on the TW deal for $35 is refundable. Any pro tips?

It would still be locked to Cricket unless you stay with them longer, 6 months I think
The real question is will the device still be fine for use on cricket if you port out your number after the first month. Was thinking of getting this for my brother as his first phone, which I'm assuming would require me to port in my existing number, then port it out once I get the phone, then give it to him to use with cricket or an rsim.

Yes, you can put another cricket SIM card.

Good as a backup, car gps, exchange, iPod touch
Are you saying that you can get this bad boy for like $50 + $30 service + taxes so in total like $100 dollars, then keep it as a wifi-only ipod, game device etc. without ever fully unlocking it? And that cricket will let a $400 phone go that easily? Don't they lose big money from this?

There were reports that the eSim on the prepaid carriers were unlocked. No US prepaid/MNVO support eSims yet, but I'm going pick one of these up just in case.
There are plenty of prepaids that support esim.

AT&T Prepaid being the most notible. Check /r/nocontract for posts about mvnos that support it.

Do I have to use this phone or I just need to use their service on any device for 6 month to unlock it?

Do you have to choose the $60 plan? or are you able to pick the $30 plan?
Can you cancel right when you receive phone or is there a minimum amount of time to keep line open?
