I ordered two phones within minutes of one another. I bought numbers on eBay. The first phone still says transfer pending. I have a shipping confirmation on the second phone. Should I cancel the first phone and reorder?
Don't do that. Either call cricket or wait.

so if i take sim out of this phone and will use phone with rsim on other provider, but still pay for cricket service, will phone still unlock in 180 days after request?
I'm no expert on this. In theory it should work going by what I observed. May be my case was unique and the countdown continued to happen even after I switched it off and switched on again using a different sim just because of a flaw in their system. It could also be because I never used the phone in a different network. I really don't know.

Ok, so if I'm already a Cricket customer and don't want to go through the crazy referral business, I can just:

1) Buy a number to port off of Ebay
2) Port the number in under a new account
3) Activate the phone
4) Cancel my service

Is that right? How long would I need to keep the plan open for?

This phone has two sims. You can try esim for Cricket since you pay, and rsim for the other. If this works, your unlock should be fine by theory.

If you won't keep the new line, ignore 3 and 4.

Anyone got a link to a reliable seller on eBay to buy a number to port-in to Cricket?

My 2 iPhones just arrived and they are the version that still come with the charger and AirPods. Cricket SIM cards and activation instructions. My trade in boxes from apple (phobio) are enroute.

There's no "activation" needed per se. You simply take the nano SIM from your existing line and slip it into the new phone and it should start working.

Anyone curious to know if any online Unlock service can be used. You can't. Looks like Cricket marks the phones are Financed till you use 6 months of service.

"Unfortunately, according to the check, your iPhone can not be network unlocked as the Financial Eligibility Date (FED) has not been met yet."

If that's the case, it'll screw a lot people thinking about using it as a trade in device... where did you run the IMEI check at? My phones arriving today.
