You can buy the R-SIMs off ebay/amazon and they are usually $10 give or take.
It works reasonably well and the wiki talks about how to operate it, the only challenge is sometimes iOS updates break it and sometimes you need a new ICCID but for the most part it's great and allows you to use a SIM locked phone with any provider. and in this case you dont have to wait 180 days with Cricket to get an unlock code.
Keep in mind it is unlike the factory unlocking process which is permanent. Here you are dependent always on the R-SIM.
back in the day it also went by the name Gevey SIM.

edit: before 6 months
I didn't downgraded the same day I activated the service, I did it the second day. What I mean is,
So, the same day you received your phone, you go online, you downgrade your plan to $30 per month, then the $60 you paid, can last for 2 months. All their plans run on 30days schedule. Example: $30 day plan means $1 each day. Since I did it 1 day late, so when I downgraded my plan to $30, the second month have $29 remaining. I have to pay $1 to cover my second month cost.
For the folks who concerns about auto pay, cricket won't be auto charge you, unless you put in your credit card and setup autopay.
The other line I use everyday, and planning to continue using it as time goes by, by login into pc cricket site,
Under account summary, there is a option ask for unlock, when you click it, it will let you know how many days you have to stay in order to unlock. There will be count down time there.
I was told, these phones have to be under cricket service in order to get them unlocked, but it doesn't have to be in under your account, or same phone.
I order one SE as well, and I am going to sell this SE, and put sim into my iphone 8 plus from cricket's previous sale, try to make up those 180 days, and get it unlock. SE is just too small for me.
The 8 plus I ordered 2 months ago, 1 under my name and another under my husband's name.
Currently SE I ordered, I placed under my name, different credit cards each time.
Planning to order another one under my husband's name again.
BOA have $25 credit offer for cricket, for their visa card users, for the first time signing up cricket. I claimed the offer 2 months ago, and I can no longer claim it again, you guys can check it out.
For those worry of not activating the plan, I don't see why. Those $60 go towards the plan is not refundable, it will goes on waste! Just activated leave it there for 2 months, if you don't pay, your line will be cancelled, no worries. Or put it into a old phone for kids to use for 2 months. I don't see why not?
Oh, btw, hint.
So 2 months ago,
I created account A, generated refer code for account B,
And then I went ahead to activated and signed up for account B. (Remember, refer code have to be generated before second account is activated)
I used my account A in daily and give account B's sim to my 6 year old.
2 months later, my account A earned $25 credit and account B also earned $25.
I called cricket the day my credit showed up in my account B and asked to combine both account.
The credit from my account B merged to account A, and I cancelled my account B.
So, my account currently have $50 credit.
I have a chase card but never got the offer. i wonder what triggers it
