recent previous deals for reference.

got this last time and so far so good.

something to watch out for during shipping is that they will send you the 10 piece kit and separate additional pieces. well, with those additional pieces you might get charged for faster shipping even if you have prime. I had to chat and put my foot down to get that additional shipping back.

i did have 2 different motion sensors trigger a tamper alarm in the middle of the night. a simple open and close of the sensor fixed that. so, at pairing when you pull the first time plastic battery tabs you might want to open and close the sensor.

ebay has good prices on additional pieces like 2 contacts for ~$25, motion for $20-25, and others.

you do not have to buy the gen2 first alert smoke alarm with the scanable QR code. you can use the gen1 without the QR code. ~$30 ebay

The Ecolink garage door tilt sensor can be had for $16-30 ebay.

when it comes to the dome sensor, it definitely is NOT worth $40. battery operated and not loud at all. they can sometimes be found on ebay for $20-30. i plan to hack a couple with a relay to trigger a siren horn.

if you get the ring cam, there is a known bricking issue where when you set them up and they immediately update the firmware they can brick. I did have to exchange one.

if you get the Lighting hub, there is a known issue where the hub will not communicate with older android cells during setup when it links to your cell to get your router ssid and password. if you have that happen just use a newer cell or tablet.

if you have keypads chime in addition to the hub they will be slightly out of sync (if even tells you this). sounds like an echoing effect.

if the keypad red wifi light comes on then you need to use the plugin range extender between the hub and keypad. rule of thumb if you have a good sized house you want to use one repeater in each room or so. additional can be had for $20-25 ebay.

i use the new ring keypad 2nd gen for both ring and smartthings. to differentiate between i put a transparent colored dot on the ones for smartthings.

How and what do you use the Ring keypad gen2 with Smarthings?
you have to subscribe to RBoys device handlers. the one time fee is the best way to go.

[RELEASE] Ring Alarm Keypad (2nd Gen) Device Handler [smartthings.com]

RBoy Apps SmartThings [rboyapps.com]

I have a smartthings motion v3 with magnet stock to the inside back of the mailbox. using Rboys smartthings device handler for the ring keypad and also his chime device handler when mailbox motion is detected a ring keypad is sounded and i get an alert notice on my cell.

Some newbie questions. I have home security system prewired when the home was built. I am getting ripped off paying $39 a month and use Alarm.com app for full control. I am debating on getting one of these kits instead to replace the system. Can the system be setup to alert you with voice on which doors open ? For example my current system just chimes anytime a door opens. I rather know which door opened say garage door, porch door etc. How do the sensors communicate? are they using bluetooth or wifi?
Sensors use Z-Wave, different protocol.
Dont think you can set it to tell you which one opens.
If you have wired you might also wanna check out https://ring.com/products/retrofit-alarm-kit

Does anyone have State Farm insurance? Does this give you the 10% homeowners discount?

Thanks for the link.

I too have a prewired system and the contacts are hidden in the door/window frames, hard to tamper with, and therefore worth reusing. On the other hand, I definitely have more than 8 contact sensors, maybe more than 16 :-(

(There might also be a wireless contact sensor for a location where they couldn't get a wire run)

Would this work well for a rental house? Would a tenant be able to create a ring account and manage it? Then when they move out I would need to be able to reset it for the next tenant. Any major problems y'all can think of? Pros and cons?

I have same issue. I probably have 20 sensors and smoke/co2. Looks like the smoke and co2 become incompatible. Also looks like you need to get Ring Alarm Security Kit in addition to the retrofit alarm kit.

my understanding is that if you want a two pad system you have to buy this one. you can not buy two single pads from costco and make them work together.
Apologies for the newbie question: why would two keypads be valuable? For two-story homes maybe?

I got two Costco packages. I need four more sensors to cover all our windows, but I will just use the motion sensors in those areas. We have one set up with all our doors. I love having an alert when a door is opened or if the motion sensor is activated while we are away.
Can you have the two costco ring base working together? I'd like to have the additional base with alarm in a separate room, of course the 2nd pad.

Are you being serious? It's a QR code scan and the system is supposedly expandable hence the "add device" in ring app. I simply can't comprehend the limitation of the set only work with what comes in the same package but nothing else, doesn't make sense from both a functional or technical standpoint, heck even from marketing standpoint.

Do you have a source quoted such limitation?

Only one base. You can always add a keypad though. I think the Costco deal or this 14 piece deal plus the extra keypad or whatever else you need is the way to go.

Yes, the retrofit kit adds wired sensors to the wireless alarm system

Lots of useful information at https://support.ring.com/hc/en-us...-Alarm-Kit
