The ER3-XR Extended Response offers a modest bass boost, building on the sound quality of the ER3-SE, while providing a slight bass boost for those listeners that prefer a stronger low end response. ~ persian_mafia

Excellent earphone. Front page material.
So I had a chance to compare ER2XR and ER3XR just last week.
There is an internet consensus that ER2XR is a better IEM overall due to its value.
ER3XR has a much better definition to my ears. I could distinguish all the different instruments easily as they had better definition. ER2XR might have slightly more Bass, but without definition it wasn't really up to the hype. Mind you they have different IEM component, ER3XR is balanced armature while ER2XR is a dynamic driver. I might actually like the BA sound characteristics while others liked the dynamic driver.

Here is the bottom line.
Given ER2XR at $79 vs ER3XR at $125, definitely ER2XR. Not a world changing difference.
ER2XR at $79 sv ER3XR at $79? Not even a question. ER3XR all the way.
Excellent price for a good IEM.

As a matter of fact, I am listening on it right now.
SE = Studio edition: More balanced and not exaggerated. Less Bass. Studio quality?
XR = Extended response: More Bass. More for fun?

Is how I understand as in general.

What exactly does Extended Response mean and how are these better than the average earphones?

increased bass I assume?Keep in mind that this series is know to be extremely low on bass so I would consider ER being more "balanced".

The real problem for these things is almost every cellphone is wireless and you can get much better choice on over-ears for pc usage.

These are typically known for being balanced and the XR slightly enhances the bass to around what you would expect... I have these, excellent headphones. They are deep insertion into your ear. It takes a while to get used to. For reference I have Shure 535s, ME A161p, Westone Adventure, Sennheiser CX300, 598, Grado SR60i, Bose QCs and tons of cheaper ones....these are in the top 2 or 3 of all of them. At this price point they are a great deal.

Maybe for iOS, but Android phones still include jacks. Especially low/mid range models...

One of the reasons I have stuck with my iP 6S Plus! Latest most powerful model with a built in headphone jack port!

Is Adorama going out of business or something? What's with these Etymotic sales?

These are wired Ear phones , they don't compare to wireless equipment . They don't run out of batteries , the sound isolation is superb. I use mine when docked at the PC or using a lightning adapter on my iPhone . I can't wear over the ear headphones , my ears always hurt after about 6 hours at the office . These can stay in for hours ... no big deal. But yes, I have trained my ear to be used to IEM insertion . Took about 2 months to get used to!
