We need to make a sticky on this topic:

If you need to transcode streams, you're better off with an intel CPU (even celeron) that can do QuickSync. 7th gen or better, but 8 is really the sweet spot. Whether it's your regular desktop computer or a headless mini client or something, it's the way to go. Kodi has client-side transcoding, so these ARM NAS's are fine for that.

If you aren't transcoding, then any NAS should be sufficient.

IMO, optimal pattern is a NAS separate from PMS duty. NAS -> wired connection -> PMS transcoding box -> wired connection -> switch/WAP

Are you using the on board software to manage the cameras?

Is there an option to use this via USB? I rent and don't want to plug it into the home owners router but rather in my room. I just want the option to use raid. TIA. Would it be bad to turn these off and on every day?

recommend buying an external hard drive. and when you are comfortable with using hardwire to the router, then go buy a NAS, maybe it will be cheaper. the following ex hard drive is a front-page deal.

How is the "+" feature set (better processor, etc) in reality?

I have a DS216J, the basic model and while it works fine for light file storage it just can't run Plex. I don't even have my files transcoding or anything and I guess I don't see the benefit of moving up to this.

At the price, its a great deal. Just asking for advice if this would be a noticeable improvement for me.
