... I also just added 8GB to it yesterday, making it 10GB total.

I used non-official ram and it works great for me. I'm at 10GB now

Guys, any benefits when adding more ram for home normal use of storage (not Plex server or something)?

How do you guys use this for Plex? Just as storage or can run Plex server as well? I have Plex pass will this run 3 parallel streams with 1 transcoding easily? Just to confirm all 3 streams on apple tv

For those added extra memory, what brand/specs did you buy? Is there a warning sign from Synology UI when you boot it up? I heard some Samsung memmories do not have that problem but not sure whether it is the case for 220+. Thanks.

Curious about how Plex works on these things. I'm looking to stream some 4K/1080p streams...

I bought this a few months ago as my first NAS. It's very good, no troubles. Using SHR (one drive failure tolerance) with two 6tb Iron Wolf drives. I'm not using it as a media server so ram and cpu usage is very low.

We need to make a sticky on this topic:

If you need to transcode streams, you're better off with an intel CPU (even celeron) that can do QuickSync. 7th gen or better, but 8 is really the sweet spot. Whether it's your regular desktop computer or a headless mini client or something, it's the way to go. Kodi has client-side transcoding, so these ARM NAS's are fine for that.

If you aren't transcoding, then any NAS should be sufficient.

IMO, optimal pattern is a NAS separate from PMS duty. NAS -> wired connection -> PMS transcoding box -> wired connection -> switch/WAP

I went with Crucial 8GB. No warnings or errors here.

If it's just for media storage, you should be fine with 2gb built-in memory. I use it for media storage, plex, cloud sync on my 218+ with a total of 6gb. Never had a problem in last 1 year.

Just a quick question, do I need to add extra memory at beginning or I can do it later without formatting my drive?
