We need to make a sticky on this topic:

If you need to transcode streams, you're better off with an intel CPU (even celeron) that can do QuickSync. 7th gen or better, but 8 is really the sweet spot. Whether it's your regular desktop computer or a headless mini client or something, it's the way to go. Kodi has client-side transcoding, so these ARM NAS's are fine for that.

If you aren't transcoding, then any NAS should be sufficient.

IMO, optimal pattern is a NAS separate from PMS duty. NAS -> wired connection -> PMS transcoding box -> wired connection -> switch/WAP

Looking to buy a NAS for first time.

1) How is better than the DS220j which is about a $100 cheaper ?

2) For what types of use is this better than just getting the DS220j ?

I buy this over 220j, because this one will be better for my Plex. But if you only want a NAS for storage, 220j is great.

Preordered it at launch after failing to get a very expensive sell R710 for unRaid to work as I didn't have enough experience and basic macbook. I regret having all that money gone down the drain but do not regret buying this.
My use case is having plex for home videos, on demand backup, two containers including UniFi controller and by this weekend have two reolink 510 rlc.
The only thing I absolute hate is being forced to buy the official memory for expanding. For 4GB of memory, the price is ridiculous for the sake of not voiding warranty

I used non-official ram and it works great for me. I'm at 10GB now

I had bought the 200j originally, returned it and bought this 2 weeks ago. The main reason was that this can run Docker where the j series cannot. I also just added 8GB. This is definitely a better upgrade.

Not really. Not a huge fan of the UI though, and haven't ever upgraded the memory, but wondering if that's worth it at this point
