Love Letter is a really fun quick portable game and one of our favorites for my wife to throw in her purse before going to a friend's house. Easy to pick-up and games are fast.
Can anyone comment on Catan? It looks like a complicated game but fun at the same time. Is it a game that most people could understand and have fun? What age range would this best be suited for?

it is vey good and easy once you understand the game. it can get very competitive and we play regularly with my 10 year old kid

It is fun and not really all that complicated. Depends on how smart the kids are buy I'd say 5th graders would understand the mechanics. It's one of those games where it's easy to learn but harder to pickup on strategy. There's a YouTube guy named Dylight that does a good job breaking down strategy

IME, it does take a little to get all the rules/mechanics down, but they all flow very naturally, and once you play through a "practice game", they become second nature. The instructions are detailed and very user friendly, just be sure to budget 10 min or so to read through and understand them.
For age, it can be a long game, some patience is required, as is a grasp of numbers and resource management. Box says 10+, and I would agree.
