If youre going to do ATT just get the ATT prepaid 8gb/yr plan. It costs $254/yr after target 10% off on refill and 5% disc with redcard. You wont get deprioritized to the least. My latency was through the roof with redpocket in bay area so any google assistant query wasnt immediate which is so annoying
Just a warning to all, STAY AWAY FROM REDPOCKET. They are con artists who promise unlimited talk and text but will suspend you over 1500-2000 minutes of usage and sometimes tech support will re-activate you and mostly they will tell you to buy add on minutes to continue using. No term were broken (they audited my account and admitted as much, but they said there is no limit but to protect their network they cannot give you too many minutes) so in fact their unlimited = Limited. I had paypal get involved in all three of our lines and won all the cases. They played dirty like responding to the case the last second.

You may think that 1500-2000 minutes is enough for you. But think, what if you have a loved one in a hospital meaning more usage and no one can reach you. They don't send any warning texts they just cut you off in middle of a conversation. I hope one day thee FCC sues them and screw them for millions like they did to tracfone a few years ago.

Redpocket = Scampocket

I have been using this for the last 12 months. Everything has been good except for group messaging is stupid and intermittent. It sometimes doesnt come through or it comes through as individual text messages. Lucky I dont't get a lot of group text but this may be a deal breaker for you. I am using the ATT network on with GSMA if it matters. Android LG V40
I was with Red Pocket for 18 months. (yearly plan and then renewed for another 12 months) - In the middle of the second year my group messages went sideways for no apparent reason. Went round and round with customer service for a month or two. Finally just ate the remaining months and ported out. Group messaging was a deal breaker for me and could never get resolved (after having it work for 18 months - same android phone - no change on my end).

So long as it is the same plan, you can do so by following the steps provided below:
On eBay, SIM Type > drop-down > select renewal/existing sim
Is the 8GB plan considered the same as the 5GB unlimited plan from last year or do I need a new sim card if I am renewing this (5GB) plan from last year?

Forgive this very basic question. Does using this truly give the same cellphone experience as postpaid accounts? There must be a tradeoff, what is it? My questions assume an independently purchased unlocked phone is available.
Differences:
1) As with pretty much all prepaids and resellers, data is subject to being "deprioritized" at busy times - in crowds, during rush hour. Postpaid users get priority, and data can slow to unusable speeds. That might or might not work for you. I have redpocket for my kids. But not for myself - rush hour, events etc were exactly the times I was away from wifi and used cellular data.

2) Limited selection of devices.

3) Limited support. I haven't needed much.

I've had it for 2 years on two different phones with CDMA ( verizon coverage ) and its been OK. The visual voicemail stops working about once a year and I need to call them to re-activate it. Sometimes my phone shows no service or it doesn't ring when someone calls despite being in an area with decent coverage, I think you get deprioritized when networks ar busy. When you need to call them for customer service its frustrating since they don't have full access to verizon's systems, but its still much better than having to deal with tracfone customer service.

All in all, I'd say its the same or better as verizon prepaid and definitely worth it for the savings.

Anyone here knows-- if I'm on GSMA plan right now (AT&T based), bit want to switch to GSMT (t-mobile based): should I buy the renew option or should I buy the GSMT option?

You don't need a new SIM to renew if you're not switching carriers.

It's the same one. They upgraded everyone from 5GB to 8GB. You can confirm on your Red Pocket account under My Lines.

if you're refilling only, will they mail the refill card, or email only? I'd like to use a tax-free state for the refill if possible

If you're going to be talking to friends and family more than a few hours a day multiple times a week, steer clear and find another provider. Red pocket doesn't really offer unlimited talk/text. They ADVERTISE it, but that's not what you get.
I purchased same plan last month and am barely a month into it. Because I've gone over my allotted talk minutes, I currently don't have voice service and have to wait until my cycle rolls over for it to be active again. What those minutes and text numbers are, are solely at the discretion of Red Pocket.
Admittedly, the service while active is great, so I'll give them that fwiw
