The 779 is the same saw for $200 less than the 780, plus you get the mobile stand. For $60-80 you can add the light (which most people don't even use) to make it the same exact saw. This is a good deal.

779 so not a great deal, the stand makes it ok though. If it was the 780 it would be amazing.

Possibly.. This is a good deal, though it has been to $350 a few times for this same deal. It is a fantastic saw, the slide is very tight so you don't have to worry about big inaccuracies with the slide unlocked like cheaper sliding miters. Also, the positive stops actually work and are also very accurate to their angles in my experience, in comparison to others (have used several ridgid & kobalt). If you need a saw for coming up projects I would hop on this deal. It may go lower but not a guarantee. With the discounted Lowe's gift cards from previous deals this technically can be had for a bit less and would be a pretty slick deal.

Would this or a portable table saw be a better choice as a first saw for standard home DIY projects?

If you want to get any sort of angle without the full table saw setup, then a miter saw.

I have this one and love the dual bevel and sliding options. You can get cheaper saws, but they may not have both.

The stand isn't bad. Used it for a while until I used my saw to build myself a woodworking table with a flip top to house the miter saw underneath.

This saw has had some changes where some other features are missing besides the Led light. You have to open the saw and see if it is a type 1 to be exact match. Type 20 or 21 is newer model without the level stop paws and sliding top lever. My local Lowe's had the DWS780 and free stand yesterday and I bought it.

A table saw is MUCH more versatile than a miter saw. A table saw can do virtually everything that a miter saw can do, along with a whole lot more.

Unless you've got a big trim install project in you future, I'd definitely go with the table saw.
