I already have a 2 bay synology nas. Can this be linked together to act as a single 4 bay unit?

I won't profess to be an expert in any capacity in this area, but I do own this and its fast enough to stream dual 1080p video streams to two rooms in the house. Easy to setup RAID. Easy as hell web interface. I have streamed a 4k video as well.

I do not use transcoding which is what I would presume is its major downfall. So, if you just plan to use it for storage, access to files as a download/upload or plan to just stream without transcoding, this is an extremely stable entry into the NAS world for a price that makes it hurt much less after buying dual RED drives Big Grin

Will this be good for someone just looking to backup pictures from multiple devices? Looking to get my own google photos replacement. I have a Plex lifetime, can this be combined with that to create personal cloud?

Tempted to upgrade my DS210j (yes, it is from 2010 and I've been using it for 10 years).

It's been rock solid but at 10 years old, time to upgrade?

I'm in the same boat, rocking a 10 year old synology nas. I'm tempted to jump on this, especially with the discover CB going on, but my nas is still going strong so I think I'm going to pass.

That might change depending on how much whiskey goes in to my eggnog later todaySmilie

No. Don't fall into the marketing. Save your money. What's another 10 years.

Thank you both. Good advice. No reason to fix what isn't broken. nod

Has anyone installed Plex Server on this model? How well does it function? Does it have any buffering (lag) issue?

I think it all matters on whether anything will transcode or not. Sounds like this should allow direct play fine, but will struggle if it needs to transcode.

Not specifically this model. Have the DS218+, plex server on it runs perfectly. Have a couple of WD 4TB Red drives. Been flawless streaming movies and having personal cloud for photos and music on the mobile or tv.

Use this as a very basic NAS or to backup your existing NAS, which is what i m doing and it works great. For my use case, which is a straight backup and file browsing, it works great. CPU is fast. Only limitation is the 512mb ram which is non upgradeable. However, with core services running, Ram stays at 35% even under backup runs. So, works great for my use case.

Yes, it can. Your own cloud storage without big corporate having the same access. I recommend it.
