Sad that this might be the best deal this BF.
Aside from the comedy value of carrying an AARP card in my wallet and giving my wife her own on Christmas morning, can anyone list some specific benefits of being an AARP member? I'm genuinely interested.

Hotel rates, restaurant discounts. Pretty easy to recoup 10 bucks and in only 40.

I travel (pre covid) for a fortune 100 company and the aarp discount (available to anyone with the card) was always competitive, if not better, than my company rate at the big hotel chains. There's also a British airways 10% discount I think but I never looked into it. Rental car rates were okay also but not as good as aaa.

I'm turning 50 next Aug. Do they check your age or anything? Can I do this now?

The form had me enter in his birthday . . . . There was no other verification process. Maybe call them? I am sorry I do not have more information.

This is great. I wonder what other discounts they give for AT&T. Will have to check it out.

Was not sure if existing members can renew (was not sure of the definition of "returning" member), but I checked and existing members can renew too with BF special.

You can join at any age, I was a member starting at 40. I just lied and told them a different age but so far none of the retailers have ever checked, they just look at my AARP card. I got it honestly because my wife was ordering Papa Johns pizza so much and one day I saw a cheap deal on a AARP membership so I got it just so I could get 25% off all her pizza purchases lol. Then as we traveled a lot I found a ton of places that accept the card for discounts as low as 10% up to 50%.

Here is a small sample of restaurants that take the card. You can easily make your money back if you travel or eat out a lot. If you don't do either of those things then you might not need a membership.
  • A&W Restaurants: 10 percent discount, amount may vary by location
  • Applebee's: Golden Apple Card program discounts range from 10 to 15 percent
  • Arby's: 10 percent; some offer a discounted soft drink
  • Back Yard Burgers: Free soft drink with meal
  • Ben & Jerry's: 10 percent discount at most locations to customers over 60
  • Bennigan's: Discounts vary by location and are available to customers over 60
  • Big Boy Restaurants: Varying discounts to customers over 60.
  • Bonanza Steakhouse: $1 off on Wednesdays
  • Bonefish Grill [aarp.org]: AARP discount of 10 percent

My apologies. That was my strange wording. I had not had enough coffee -- existing members can use this to renew as you said. I am sorry for the confusion.

I just told my sister about this as I thought my brother in law was turning 50 next week. It turns out he is 48 and going to be 49. She found this:

I'm not 50 yet, but I want to join, can I?

Yes, AARP offers Associate Memberships for people under 50. As an Associate member, you'll get all of the great benefits that come with membership that aren't restricted by vendor offer requirements, such as age-restricted insurance products.

After you turn 50, your membership will automatically convert to a full membership with no effort on your part.

I'm kind of surprised by the number of slickdealers who aren't aware that AARP memberships aren't age restricted...especially seeing that it's almost all long time slickdealers in this thread. The AARP memberships are pretty popular among all ages due to the gift card discounts offered on their website (especially for cruise lines). They updated the structure on earning points/purchasing gift cards last year so I don't know if the 10% cruiseline discount is still so easy to get.

This offer is still active, I just renewed.

Chase Offers also has a $8 cash back offer for AARP renewals. I see it on both my Freedom and Amazon cards, expiring 12/17.

You can also get the same $20 for 2 years rate without auto-renewal.
