I think the Red are SMR and the Red Plus are CMR.

It matters more for data being frequently written than it does for data at rest, so yes. For a very short explanation of the differences, see here: https://blag.nullteilerfrei.de/20...-a-hdd-mr/

Should I wait for a 7200 rpm drive or is this good enough?
If you want 10 degree higher temperature, then sure.

I meant from a speed perspective. Is this a major step down? I appreciate the assistance.

These are mostly meant for NAS situations which are usually bottlenecked by the network speed.

Are they slower than 7200rpm? Yeah for sure. I wouldn't recommend it as a regular use drive.

Thank you. It would seem then that there's really no good hard drive deals for 4 TB and 7200 RPM.

Probably because most people concerned about I/O speed these days are going for an SSD. There's just a tiny read/write difference between your average 5.4k and 7.2k RPM platter drives when comparing both to even a SATA SSD.

I wouldn't pay any significant price difference for a 7200RPM drive. Where it used to make sense, it just doesn't any more.

Thanks for the detailed response. It's very helpful. I use a 256 GB SSD for Windows and a few applications, and I have a 1 TB HDD that I save games on.

I want more space to save more games and also some gameplay that I want to record to use as video, so I wanted to get another HDD for that.

Would this [newegg.com]be a good choice in your opinion give what you've said about speeds? It's 5900 RPM.

This [amazon.com] page shows the full specs.

I used to be a WD fanboy but lately I switched to the Ironwolf Series. Not a complicated with their models, same warranty, excellent support.

Sorry WD. Go cheap, lose your customers.
