Just a reminder if you have a old Windows 7/8 key you can just download and install Windows 10 using the old key.

Don't forget, if you're a student, your university may offer Windows 10 for free.

Ok, guys, I bought a copy, tried to upgrade my Desktop (a Desktop that came pre-installed with Home, digital license), and it errored out saying it can't upgrade. What's going on? Any ideas?
What error are you getting? Should be able to complete the following steps if you're already on a lower version of Win 10:
  • Select the Start button, then select Settings > Update & Security > Activation .
  • Select Change product key, and then enter the 25-character Windows 10 Pro product key.
  • Select Next to start the upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

Got Microsoft on the line. They are troubleshooting.

Has anyone bought a key only to use like years later? I'm thinking of picking this up for my next build which I don't anticipate for another 2 - 3 years.

Microsoft is bouncing me all around to different techs. This wasn't supposed to be today's "project". There was an error code, and I will report it next time I see it. They hung up on me, so I'm trying to get re-escalated.

Because MS has figured out they can make more money from taking your information and monetizing it than they can just selling you the OS. So now they sell you the OS for cheap and than use your info to make money. In other words, they followed google and facebook down that path.
If so, why isn't everybody selling it at this price?

Isnt win 10 (any edition) free? From MS website. It will be fully functional except 'activate windows' watermark on the right-bottom. If that's ok, then why bother for code?

You can still download and get Win10 for free directly from Microsoft and get it activated. They just don't mention it or want anymore to notice anymore.

I am using free from MS but I couldn't activate it though. Do I need to do anything to get it activated? Thank you.

FYI, for everyone considering doing this:

1. The product code is TOTALLY valid - Microsoft verified it, it's legit, legal, authentic, and I wasn't really worried about it given it was from PCWorld.

2. Upgrading from Home is not necessarily a quick process - I encountered a "server glitch" according to the rep that finally fixed my problem. He was able to transition me to Pro, but recommended that any time you get a full retail license, to do a full O/S reinstall from scratch for optimal outcome. I will probably do this anyway in the next few days, because I'm sure Microsoft left some registry garbage and bloat in the upgrade process. Basically, a clean slate is usually best.

Some may disagree, and say upgrading is cake, but it wasn't, at all, for me. Maybe I just got unlucky.
