Those reviews are pretty eye-watering.

- Lag bolts sheer in half well below maximum weight rating
- Lag bolts sheer during installation (even with pre-drill)
- Poor QA (e.g. obvious mistakes during manufacturing got shipped to customers).
- General questions about quality/tolerances (e.g. bolts that barely fully seat)

This all reads like a whose who of cost-cutting to the point of the product suffering. Lag bolts sheering for one example is the difference between an 50 cent chinesium bolt, and a $1.50+ outdoor construction lag bolt.

People blaming it on user error are just peacocking their own inexperience (i.e. a standard construction lag bolt will survive being driven with a brushless impact, and still support its rated weight, particularly into untreated 2 by 4s of all things, these are metal defects).
TD - price...

identical 4'x8' MonsterRacks were on sale for $119 two weeks ago on woot.com (expired)

I purchased 2x 4'x8' SafeRacks with hanging holder hooks for $260 2 years ago. Same price, but included multiple hooks for bicycles, ladder, etc.

I will say, these hanging storage racks are awesome! I have 2 of the 4'x8' racks over my garage door (12ft ceilings). I keep all my saws, gardening supplies, bike rack, ski rack, pop-up canopy, camping supplies, summer/winter car tires, etc. up there out of the way. I would HIGHLY recommend any of the overhead storage racks if you have the space.

A note on installation - I knew I was going to want these when we had our house built (new construction neighborhood), so I took pictures of the ceiling joists pre-drywall so I knew exactly which way the beams ran and how to install these DIY so they were correctly/strongly mounted. Use a stud finder, tape measure, and it may be worth drilling a tiny hole on either side of the studs to make sure you have these centered before drilling your pilot hole for the lag bolts. you REALLY want all 8 lag bolts centered on the separate joists. a little extra drywall filler and sample size ceiling paint is a lot cheaper than the risk of having these fall on your vehicle or you.
Well I'm not sure who is "peacocking" but I have years of experience in the trades. (Decades actually)
If I had a dollar for every review I read where user error was the issue I'd be a wealthy man. Can't count the number of times I read reviews, bought the item anyway and had zero issues. (User error)
Interesting side note; I just finished a 4x30 foot mezzanine in my shop. Full 30 foot span with no supports. (12 inch header) Obviously we used plenty of lags. I bought them all from the bins at Home Depot. We noticed some of the ones over 5 inches were shearing. I went to a hardware store and bought some different ones. Sure enough one of those sheared too. (1 of the 4)
I was perplexed as the sheared bolts were only in the right half, none on the left side. Took some pondering to finally figure out the issue. My son drilled the pilot holes in the right half, I did the left. I used the right size bit. My son used one of the other drills with a smaller bit in it. (He saw it in the shop and assumed that was what I used)
The difference was minute. It wasn't enough to be obvious to any of us at the time. It was enough to make "good" lag bolts shear though.
So had I bought that from a store and I was inept at construction I would've left a review about how terrible my lag bolts were. In fact, it was user error.
Also, with the price of powerful impacts today at such a low level it's allowed many weekend warriors to get in over their heads. I still finish my lags with a wrench to make sure I know the torque.

Either way, if the racks come and the bolts look suspect it's an easy fix.

[insert Not_Sure_If_Serious_Or.gif here] you are aware that past sales prices are used in determining if the current price is in fact a 'slickdeal' or not, right?

also, that's a turrrrible price. This 'deal' is only $260 for 2x. And here's a slickdeal link for another 2x pack for only $240: https://slickdeals.net/f/14562089-2-pack-saferacks-4-x-8-overhead-storage-kit-239-99?utm_source=iphone_app&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=external+share

This is an ok deal. I purchased Hyloft 45 x 45 for $46 from Amazon and even that I thought was a pretty average deal.

What's the thought of these vs Saferacks?

Just read some reviews on Lowe's that worried me about bolts not holding etc. It looks like a known issue for several customers too.

I installed fleximount 4x8 in my garage a month ago. Buy directly from their site with a coupon code for cheapest price. 4x8 grid are $132 and 4x8 plywood are $67. I like the racks where you add your own plywood because you can paint the plywood to match and you don't see all the clutter on the shelf.
I'm using the fleximount 4x8 as well. Been using for about 6 months now and I'm thinking about getting another. The reviews on the Gladiator ones are what made me search for an alternative in the first place. However, the Costco saferack 2-pack deal is tempting me!

Does anyone know how to mimic just the shelf portion? Plywood wouldn't be terrible, but looking for that exposed metal shelf for a diy.

I can't compare but I've been using the safe racks for years with no issues. Came with an accessory pack to hang more stuff from it.

Expanded metal? Not sure what size and capacity you are wanting.

Or learn how to install properly? These are DIY installs, in most cases DIY'ers have no idea what they are doing and either drill a large pilot hole or none at all. I always take those types of reviews with a grain of salt. (Worse case scenario you end up buying a couple extra bolts)
My thoughts thus far is that every bolt would break if there were issues. A lot of broken bolts just points to the facts that most homeowners don't have a clue.
Lag bolt failures on something that'll hold hundreds of pounds over your head are not something to shrug off. Sketchy enough DIYers hitting center joist, why throw in material failures.

Get the Costco saferack ones. These are just like legos and you add 2x4 or 4x4 racks together. This means that you will have a support bar in the middle of your shelf is you have one that's is longer than 4'.
I have the saferacks from Costco that is 160 right now and much better. No middle support.
You may have the older version of Saferack where it uses a single beam. In the new version, you link two 5ft beams together to get the 8ft support beam. So you have a foot of overlap in the middle. With that said, I don't think it impacts the weight capacity that much. It's mostly a matter of aesthetic as the single beam looks much cleaner.

Well that's pretty much my point. Gladiator isn't a small company. This isn't some Chinese unbranded item from the swap meet. Do you think these bolts weren't tested? Not rated? They just ship them out with a couple drywall screws and wait for the lawsuits to roll in? (Injured kids, wrecked cars, etc) 1 fatality caused by a underrated bolts and gladiator is no more.
So, what do I think is more reasonable? Homeowners are clueless or gladiator (sold by Home Depot, Lowe's, etc) are shipping millions of overhead racks with failing bolts?
If the bolts look suspect I'd chuck them. Cheap and easy enough to replace. My point was it's silly to pass on these if you need them because of the bolt reviews. Worst case, replace them. Best case, look them over and decide when you get them.
In my case I'll be going into 2x8's so I'll be getting longer lags anyway.

I'm in no way suggesting anyone hang anything with bad bolts, I wouldn't. I'm just saying don't let bad bolt reviews sway you

That's a good deal and comes with hooks accessories. Got this at the same price at Costco last year, it's well worth it for us to re-gain some garage space.
