This is a "Cyber Monday" deal, although, it ends in 11 hours as of this posting. It also isn't in stock until December 6.

I don't have any personal experience with this machine, but the reviews are good and it has a feature that caught my eye, the portafilter (OK, more than one, thermoblock heating, PID, and pre-infusion too).

It has a commercial sized 58 mm portafilter which is unheard of in this price-range. I just watched a YouTube review that showed it has three locking lugs as opposed to commercial portafilters that have two, so I don't think you'll be able to replace the handle itself or add a naked portafilter. I found a pretty good review on YouTube https://youtu.be/2M0yL0i-GoU

Unfortunately this model only comes with the pressurized baskets (The machine with a grinder combo includes both pressurized and unpressurized. Pretty dumb of Calphalon to not include this with the grinderless model). The video reviewer said they don't even offer unpressurized baskets as an accessory. The good news is according to users it's compatible with standard 58 mm portafilter baskets that you can buy inexpensively if you so choose. You need a decent burr grinder if you do.

As mentioned, they also have a model with a built-in grinder similar to the Breville Barista Express for $389.99. Unfortunately, prices seem to have gone up on the Breville so this may be a good alternative. If you're not a fan of built in grinders you could buy the $195 Calphalon and something like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro for $199 rather than buying the combined model. I like separates myself, buy some people prefer to have the grinder built in.

- 15-Bar Italian pump delivers the right amount of pressure for maximum flavor extraction and produces a beautiful layer of crema for your Espresso
- Dial interface for selecting steam, hot water, and pre-programmed single and double shots
- 58mm café-sized porta filter holds more grounds and ensures even water dispersion and extraction for robust flavor
- Thermoblock heating technology and PID temperature control delivers even heat for consistently great-tasting Espresso, and pre-infusion gently blooms The espresso grounds for optimally extracted Espresso
- Removable 2.0L water reservoir with hinged lid for easy filling
- Cup warming tray for espresso-ready cups and steam wand froths milk for creating cappuccinos, lattes, and other drinks, just like in coffee shops
- Includes stainless steel milk pitcher, tamper, and cleaning pin (Cleaning Pin located in the 'Accessories' storage area under the Drip tray )

Alright guys... but what does James Hoffman say about this machine?
I looked into this machine in early summer - was remotely interested because I have 3 other Calphalon appliances; and it's the cheapest machine you can get with an electronic PID (usually, you have to spend $700 and up to get electronic PID). I saw many reviews regarding the super poor quality of the portafilter - in that they glued the plastic handle to the portafilter head, and it's apparently falling off after use. Was a deal breaker because if they skimped on that, what else are they cutting corners on in terms of the machine's guts? I guess you could try getting a 3rd party portafilter - but it might be hard to find one since Calphalon isn't a known name in the espresso machine space.
The $90 website is a scam.

Hed probably suggest buying a used gaggia since they will be more reliable but these prosumer ones are alright with the right grinder

So for $200, you don't get a grinder and it's a manual machine? What am I missing

I am not an expert by any means but I think the pressure/temperature is a big deal when considering output. Also, most(I think) prefer grinders to not be attached as they are usually the first thing to go on these machines and the extra cost usually can't be justified.

On paper, it is a fantastic machine for $200 — pid, pre-fusion profile and 58 portafilter. It is a no brainer for an entry level espresso maker. Amazon's return policy makes it an even better deal.

espresso aficionados spend much more than $200 on a grinder alone. Smilie

I'd grab the model with a grinder if you don't have an additional $300-400 dollars to spend on one. It won't be fantastic but should get you by. Spend a few bucks on an adjustable distribution tool and toss the tamp. They're game changers for an even extraction.
