Echelon EX-4S Exercise Bike w/screen and 1yr membership $999 in store at Costco YMMV

So I started researching Pelotons for my wife yesterday, and have major issue spending that much. Came upon this Echelon company in another SD thread. See that they have an EX3 that has no screen, and then an EX5 that has a big Peloton-size screen but that is like $1600 or something. Costco online has that EX5 for delivery and there are a fair number of negative reviews.

Someone had mentioned this EX4 in store Costco so I went to my store today and they had 6 on the floor. Nothing online I can find about it. Has a 10 inch "HD" screen so certainly smaller than an EX5, but better than EX3 which has none. I don't know the stats on flywheel but I can say that the box was surprisingly freakin heavy (says 120 pounds) so something in there must be "solid" haha.

I nabbed it just to have it, in case these start flying off the shelves once I post this haha. It says it comes with 1 yr of the app membership, which right there would be worth $480 I think. For me, much better to spend a thou and see if my wife really uses this, and can always do Peloton later or just stick with Echelon. We might find out that the 1yr app membership is hobbled in some way (like doesn't include live classes or something) but will see. I just nabbed the item and will store it till Xmas and then figure it out. If anyone else gets better info they can share. Benefit of this unit beyond the price is that I actually have it in hand, vs some vaporware delivery slot for Echelon EX5 or Peloton....

Peloton is all about the content and the community, which are both unmatched in the competitors. I went through the same thought process you did and ended up getting myself to bite on a used Peloton from FB Marketplace last August. We're 350+ rides in and love it. I am a cheapass and regard it to be one of the best purchases I have ever made.

If you're looking to go cheaper I would consider a $200-400 spin bike from Amazon and use the Peloton app on a mobile device or tablet for $10/month. You will lose out on stats and some features, but still have access to all the content.

I was told in the other thread that starting this month, you cant use any third party cadence trackers on the Peloton app, so going the really cheap route means you wont actually see anything of your performance if you are using the Peloton app. Some reviews said Echelon has continued to improve its game app-wise and has live classes etc, and with this bike you could actually "participate" in those. I dunno I felt like worth taking the chance as this is $999 and Peloton + 1 yr classes is like $3000....plus I don't think I can even get a Peloton before Xmas unless I found it used. I totally agree if I could find a good used Peloton for $1000 or something I would do that all day long.

North Suburbs of Chicago. I attached the picture with the item number so you can call ahead to your local store and ask. The store I called had 6 units, out near the other Xmas toys etc. There was also some Echelon rowing machine there.

I don't know for sure but I gotta think the flywheel in this thing is 30 pounds and not 15....otherwise how could this freakin box weigh 120 pounds.....I am wondering if this is basically an EX5 bike with a cheaper 10 inch monitor instead of the 21 inch from the EX5. Echelon experts could opine perhaps by looking at the picture. Again I didn't know or care anything about exercise bikes 36 hours ago until my wife started saying that "all her friends" have Pelotons haha. So I am probably already in trouble for not getting her the real Bentley of exercise bikes since "all her friends" are worth those.....

Yes that is the one. You must also be in Chicago north suburbs I guess haha.

I assume other stores have them. The picture I posted was from that Reddit thread I saw yesterday and was from somewhere else in USA, so at least 2 stores out there have them.,.....

Some Chase CC are paying you back up to 6 months of the peloton mobile service. I don't even have a bike (but do have a treadmill with a 46" smart TV) so I'm trying it out.

Peloton give a 30 trial, so in reality get 7 months free. My daughter has already done several yoga classes.

I doubt I'd keep, but free for 7 months, I'll try it out.

I bought the $500 Echelon bike a couple months ago & it came with 6 months of free Echelon classes. Having the chase offer for free Peloton classes, I've since been trying that. Everything I'd read online made it seem like there was a night & day difference between the two and Peloton classes were significantly better. I really haven't found that to be the case. Both have instructors I like and dislike and tailor their classes a little differently, but I haven't found myself drawn to use Peloton classes over Echelon, particularly when I can't sync my stats to Peloton (as they've now started blocking 3rd party cadence monitors).

YMMV of course, but I'm really happy with my Echelon purchase.

Points off this device for being walled garden proprietary approach. I was all obsessed with Peloton or similar for a couple years until I started looking into actual cost of ownership, and some shady stuff the do to keep people always on the hook to pay them more, etc.

Recently got a smart Wahoo trainer, and been using it almost daily for the last month. Hooks up to my Wahoo computer, but even without, it hooks up to Zwift. This Echelon does not look Zwift compatible, which makes it a show stopper for me to recommend to anyone. So if Echelon sells out to another company or goes out of business, you've got a really expensive paperweight on your hands. And you can't use their hardware without their subscription service. At least they did bundle the first year of service into the price, something stingy Peloton won't even do.

Zwift has training plans created with Olympians, world class cyclists, runners, triathletes, etc. They customize them all based on your actual metrics like age, weight, HR, power, cadence & speed. You participate with your 3D character in any of around 10 Grand Theft Auto open type worlds (no cars or prostitutes to deal with) and decide if you want to ride up a mountain, through the desert, in Central Park NYC, Paris, London, etc. You can ride on your own, join a league, select group rides with "Mario Kart" type physics where no one is dropped or have a legit competitive race with awards. You can race for a cause (ie: I'm going on an hour ride tomorrow to raise funds for Crohn's) or create a meetup with friends. There was a Thanksgiving ride with the Zwift CEO last week where 3000+ people joined in that one event. You can "play" on your phone, tablet, Windows/Mac, AppleTV, etc.
Zwift does have a 7 day trial, then $15 a month - something I can even charge to my HSA card. And then detach my bike from the trainer and go ride it outside.

TL;DR: I'd recommend against this exercise equipment which is locked into a subscription service, which may increase in cost or turn off at any time. Get a real bike for outdoors and a trainer for about the same price, connect to Zwift, and have equipment that's higher quality and will last far longer than some future bad decision of a CEO or PE group's money grab.

I was a huge peloton skeptic and couldn't justify the cost. I ended up sucking it up and buying used one and it has been the single best purchase I've made in 2020. If you're even considering I would spend extra and just buy the peloton. I've spent hours researching and in the end, there's a reason why it has such a "cult" following"

A few things here... I went with the Peloton because of the wide variety of content and high-quality instructors. I also have a Chase Sapphire credit.

Apple also has a Fitness offering that could be a good deal with an Apple One plan if you are in that ecosystem.

Thanks that makes me optimistic. I want something she can use that would feel like Peloton (and she has never used Peloton so she doesn't really know!). Once Covid passes we have gym memberships so I am still a little wary on whether this will be used a lot or whether it will become a basement relic like that Foosball table I spent 6 hours putting together on Christmas Eve night 5 years ago haha
