So if you already got sucked into Amazon a year or two ago and they are now managing the subscription, this should be pretty safe to buy right?

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

To reiterate what others have said - the Amazon subscription renewal / end dates are just the dates 12 months from now when Amazon wants to place a new order for you (basically the same concept as subscribe and save) but they do not reflect the actual subscription end date on Microsoft's end if you have extended an existing subscription.

My 365 subscription was set to end May 21, 2021, I purchased this and Activated it by logging into my existing Microsoft account and now my end date is May 21, 2022. On my Amazon subscriptions page it did say "Renews December 2, 2021" so I just hit end (same thing as canceling a subscribe and save subscription) and so now it won't place a renewal order too early. Sure it could be easier if Amazon and Microsoft actually synced up, but it doesn't.

The annoyance though is definitely if you have an active subscription from another seller - you would have to sit on this new code until the current non-Amazon / non-Microsoft subscription runs out to activate it.

It seems the subscription starts the day you buy it, not the day you install it. Bummer.

There was a previous deal with BestBuy for 3-month trial keys, and a similar issue with BestBuy taking over the subscription management. A few users indicated that it was possible to then cancel auto-renew on Best Buy, then purchase a 1-month $9.99 key from microsoft, which would then push the management back to microsoft, and allow for codes purchased elsewhere. I wondering if anyone has experimented with doing this for the currently offer? I guess the issue is that you end up paying an extra $10 for 1-month, which makes this less of a deal.
Yes, I can confirm that this works as I did this with the Best Buy deal, but as you say, the extra $10 waters down this deal.

From my experience, it takes a while, sometimes several hours, for the Microsoft and 3rd party systems to sync up, so if you are having trouble with it stacking, give it a little time and recheck.

The level of freak-out about this is just not warranted.

On the Microsoft side (which is the only side that counts), Microsoft just extends your existing sub tied to your MS login. I just did it. Super simple. This is the 2nd year I've done this deal. MS now shows my sub expires in Dec 2021.

On the Amazon side, just turn off auto-renew. It doesn't matter what's listed on the Amazon page. Doesn't mean anything.

I'm not freaking out, but I did activate from Amazon and this is what I'm seeing on Microsoft now. Did you wait a while to see the update on the Microsoft side? On the Amazon side I do see the correct expiration date, but I purchased my last subscriptions from Amazon.

Yes i have done it.
First activate bestbuy one
It wont let cancel on MS side this BBY will be managing it
Cancel on Bestbuy portal under digital downloads/subscriptions
Then an hour or two (probably some batch job with hourly cycle) later it leaves it back to MS but does not show you unless you put a new code which transfers it back to MS managed

I am guessing this Amazon deal will follow same.
First it should add 12 months on top of your subscription, then cancel Amazon mgmt
Get another code now or later to transfer back to MS managed

I just renewed my Microsoft 365 subscription through BestBuy. I originally bought it on the Microsoft Store and now when I go to check my status it redirects me to BestBuy instead (which I do NOT like).

If I extend it another year by buying this from Amazon will it switch me to them?

On the Microsoft side of my account, it says managed by Amazon. On the Amazon side of things, it says it expires later this month. I turn off auto-renew (and/or cancel subscription). On the Microsoft side, there is no option to enter a keycode. Once it expires on the Amazon side, will the MS side allow me to enter a keycode to keep my subscription going (at which point it will say managed by amazon again)?

It's too bad you have to wait for it to expire as that might cause downtime for users.

Yup - I was in the same boat having an active subscription that I bought from Amazon. Easily activated this one and it added a year to my Microsoft end date for the subscription. Just turn off auto renew on all of these subscriptions in Amazon so it doesn't try to buy a new one before it actually runs out since the Amazon end date and Microsoft end date don't sync up.

Good deal but I heard amazon would take over your subscription management so additional subscriptions bought elsewhere cannot apply to the account anymore? Is there a way to switch back to microsoft?
I can confirm that it is a PITA. I was not able to stack subscription from Best Buy (got 3 month trial code from one of the slickdeals) and even Microsoft could not help as my existing subscription is managed by Amazon. They asked me to contact Amazon and multiple Amazon reps could not resolve the issue. The final solution offered to me was to wait until the expiry of subscription period and use the new code.

Can someone give me an idea why people like this subscription? Isn't it better to just buy office outright and not have a reoccurring fee?

I bought 2 365 subs through Amazon last year that looked like they stacked. 6 months later I noticed Amazon took over the subs, had unstacked them, and had them running concurrently. Chat claimed they couldn't be stacked. I'll never get 365 from Amazon again.

My sub expires in a few days and I'll use the sub I got from Newegg.

This product is for 6 users. Not one user. 6 users for $100/yr and each gets their own 1TB cloud storage. $16/yr per user for full office suite plus 1TB cloud storage. Plus your software stays up to date with latest releases.

Your outright purchase is good for 1 (maybe 2) installs, no cloud storage and you're stuck with that version forever. Outright purchase is >$200. How many times can you renew $16 before you've spent $200?

It's just a better value if you have multiple users.

I've been plagued by Amazon take over. No option to add non-Amazon product code. I've canceled auto renewal for a while, still takes me to Amazon. There is NO handoff to Microsoft site till expiry date.

Thanks that helps. Only 2 people here so the value isn't as low but I still see some benefits now. Something to consider at least and see if it's worth it over buying office home and student.
