I'm not an enthusiast audiophile, but I purchased a pair of ER4XR earbuds last week via Adorama and they just arrived yesterday. Coming from a pair of Sony WH-1000XM3, I first thought these earbuds weren't that great as they didn't have a lot of bass that I was used to with consumer-level headphones. The more I used them, the more I liked the sound though; the sound is best described as crisp and clear. No part of the music is overwhelmed, and all the instruments are clearly heard. Going back to my WH-1000XM3, I can tell that the bass is overexaggerated and the music isn't as clear. Unlike headphones or speakers, these earbuds don't sound as "full" though (I think this is called soundstage). You have push them in your ear canal and get a good seal to get the fullest sound. They do just as good of a job of blocking sound, if not better, than my WH-1000XM3s without the background hiss.
The ER4SR are supposedly the most "accurate" sounding (neutral), while the ER4XR have a slight increase in bass at the lower frequencies. I wouldn't go with less bass than that of the ER4XR to be honest. I saw some comments on other threads that recommended the ER4XR for music production still because the ER4SR can sound "sterile and clinical" (whatever that means).
Honest question: what is so different about them than the rest of the headphones? I see them a lot here, but never dared to ask...
Learn how to insert them properly. Active noise canceling headphones reduce noise by -20 to -30 dB, while the er4xr block noise by -30 to - 40 dB when inserted correctly (way more than ANC). That's why they're so dangerous if you're using them outside, you lose all awareness of outside noise, definitely not for wearing on runs or rides, but great for home or the airplane

Just got my ER4XR today and I also bought the ER3XR. The ER4XR is much better than the ER3XR in terms of clarity, sound stage. Well worth the extra cost.
The unique deep insertion design of these earbuds give you nice isolation without the use of active noise cancellation circuitry. To be honest this is the first time I listened to Etymotic earbuds and I won't know for sure how they perform on a flight until we're done with this damn Corona virus but judging from what I can tell from using them around the house they should work well on a plane.
I would say at this sale price the ER4XR is totally worth buying.

Dang, I want one. I have ER3XR and want to try out ER4XR. But it's double the price.
Of course, I am also wondering if I should buy the Sennheiser Momentum 2. Sigh.... The life of Slickdealer

Get the ER4XR, it's totally worth the price.
How are these compared to AirPods Pro, Bose QC 35 II, Sony 1000-XM4 sound quality?
Can someone please tell me what's the difference between the two?
Which one gives the more NEUTRAL sound for the music producer / audio engineer / mixing?
And which one gives the more ENHANCED sound for the music listener?
