gonna repost my last comment. i am literally using the TS3 right now. https://i.imgur.com/mGTHTj4.jpg

trust me, it's worth every penny. when i started looking for a good "dock" for my mbp, everybody recommended the TS3 but i was like "$279?! screw that i'm going to use an anker USB-C hub with PD and HDMI out for $50!" and that's fine, but not for an everyday solution. with the anker, sometimes monitors won't wake up, the PD underperforms because the hub takes power, you can't really daisychain another USB hub, etc.

then i finally broke down and got a cheap refurbed TS3 and holy cow, it's a game changer. i have literally not had one problem with it. i come to work, put my MBP down, plug in ONE cable and i'm off. I have 3 2560x1600 external monitors, plus a ton of USB devices because I have a 10 port USB hub under my desk.

there's so much bandwidth to spare with the Thunderbolt 3 40Gb/s... it can do things you just can't do with regular USB-C hubs, there's just not enough bandwidth.

plus it has ethernet, optical audio and a super high speed SD card slot that supports UHS-II SD. the thing is a beast and at $200 brand new? its a no brainer. if you're thinking about it, pull the trigger. if you use your laptop as a main machine regularly, this is such a quality of life improvement.

PS: I know this sounds like an ad, but I am in no way associated with caldigit... i just like when you spend a long time searching for a solution and then you find it. Smilie (but if you work at caldigit and want to bribe me with discounts, im happy to be a shill for you, PM me)
This model is a bit long in the tooth.

Still has DisplayPort 1.2 and TB4 is now out. If you are gonna drop this kind of cash for a dock, wait a few more months for future-proofing. New gen of TB4 docks will be out from various dock makers by then.
Thunderbolt licensing costs plus limited market.

Edit: I posted this later but am adding it here for clarity. This dock was released in Feb. 2018 (https://www.windowscentral.com/caldigit-ts3-plus). While Intel announced in 2017 that TB3 would be royalty free in 2018, Thunderbolt didn't become royalty free until 2019 (and that was just moving forward): https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2...alty-free/

Businesses build in costs up front when calculating a MSRP for a product (unless it's a loss leader, which this isn't), which means consumers still pay for the licensing costs even though they are free now.

CalDigit TS3 Plus should be compatible with Apple laptop or computer.

I never understood why these are so expensive. At the end of the day it just adds some extra ports is it not?

Damn, this is a great price. I paid full a couple of months back. This is the one to get if you are looking for cable freedom for your mbp.

Replaces many cables (power, display, mouse, keyboard, ethernet, webcam, etc) with a single tb3 cable.

It has a power supply to charge a laptop over USB-C and does DisplayPort up to 5k 60hz. If you just need some USB ports this is total overkill. If you need a 1-connection docking station to charge and display, this is a good one.

It's a literal plug and play, one cable solution. Many of us use powerful laptops that function as desktop replacements. We plug in entire desktop setups with chargers, monitors, keyboards, speakers, external hard drives, etc. Docking stations take the headache out of unplugging and then plugging everything back in when you actually need to use the laptop in a mobile setting. It's simply one cable instead of 5 or more...

I bought this within last month for this price.

Having one cable to plug is amazing! However the audio coming out of this is far inferior than connecting directly to my mac.

I'm in the same boat. I have a MacBook pro that plugs into a USB-C monitor that also charges. Everything else (keyboard, mouse, speakers) are bluetooth.so seldom may need to plug in a usb-c ssd or something like that does not justify the need for this. But point taken..different strokes for different folks. I do understand the convenience aspect if you don't have my setup but price definitely deters.
