Also, HDMI 4K is only 30Hz. Not trying to thread crap but I initially got interested in this as I am looking to get an adapter like this for use with my new Chromecast with GoogleTV and realized there was no ethernet port or 4K@60Hz (my primary use case).

Does not have ethernet port for anyone that cares. New trend on these hubs is to eliminate the ethernet port. Also, note this is max 85W passthrough power to charge your device if using PD port.
USB-C hubs like this use alt mode to carry display port signal. Display port 1.2 uses half capacity to transmit signal up to 4k@30hz. To achieve 4k@60hz, almost entire capacity of USB-C must be used. Only thing left is just enough for USB 2.0 in this case. There are products claiming 4k@60hz and USB 3.0. They can do it but not at the same time.
Display port 1.4 is able to use the same half capacity of USB-C to transmit 4k@60hz. Full USB 3.0 is available at the same time. But both hub and computer have to support display port 1.4 which is only available on newer hardware.

I am almost purchased this until I read the reviews about the HDMI. My main use would be to use as a passthrough, but now I am debating whether to hold off on the next version of it hoping for higher HDMI output.

I have to check what the Apple AV Multiport provides in HDMI. If its the same 60hz in 1080/30hz in 4K then I may just purchase the Anker

I had this, and it was having issues with intermittent display disconnections. I returned it.

4K @ 60hz https://www.apple.com/shop/produc...rt-adapter

But only the newest models, older ones that look identical only do 30

Interesting write up here: https://www.bigmessowires.com/2019/05/19/explaining-4k-60hz-video-through-usb-c-hub/
Essentially, you trade USB speed for framerate

Thanks. How do you know if you have a new one versus the old, if they are identical physically?

Edit: Just read the Product Info page on Apple's site and it states it's dependent on the computer you are using, not the multiport adapter.

So allegedly it's actually a different adapter too https://www.cnet.com/news/apple-u...-hdmi-2-0/

I have no idea how to identify the difference but if you figure it out I'm all ears!

I have a 13" MBP that apparently doesn't support 60hz.....so I guess I can only do 1080 at 60

Other than the brand(I think VAVA is RAVPower), the one in this thread has one fewer USB A port, but adds a USB C data port. Besides that, they seem pretty comparable.

Is it a model with USB-C? If so, try the ports on the left-hand side of the machine. The ports on the right side will not do 60Hz on most models even when plugged in directly.

Are these all the same thing? Is there a factory out there kicking out exactly two reference design boards for a usb-c hub that contain either ethernet or hdmi along with all these USB A ports, card slots, etc -- and every manufacturer's buying this board and putting it in their own enclosure and stamping their name on it?

That's my bet. A bunch of identical reference-design boards with different names and enclosures, hence I get the $12 rando-brand ones when I need 'em. Maybe some support more power throughput than others, but I've never bothered to run power through the hub since I've got several unused ports.
