So I don't have an existing number to qualify for this deal right now. Does anyone foresee an issue with signing up for AT&T Prepaid for a couple of weeks just to get a number and then port over?
Signing up for a prepaid plan and then porting is what many in this thread are doing.

That being said, I am not sure that at&t prepaid is your cheapest option.

It seems like most people are using a numberbarn port, a GV port or ultramobile prepaid sim.

Not sure about S20, but my Note20 from Google Fi has the Fi SIM pre-installed. I would imagine S20 would be the same.

Can you guys comment on the 400 s20 vs 300 a71?
I'm asking mostly because of the larger screen mostly and not wanting to jump up a couple hundred dollars to get it with the s20. On the other hand value is always a big factor and I dont want to sell myself too shorton resale value (when I'm done with it) or buying power relative to what else is out there. I have been using an a21 for a while and I liked it at first but it turned into a pos after 6 months or so. I've had flagship phones in the past and they seemed to hold up better. A lot better.

The service seems a little pricey even compared to att so my best guess is I'll keep it for a few months and switch when I see a good option to port our numbers for some gift cards, and keep using these phones.

Any knowledgable thoughts would be appreciated. TIA

One more factor to add to your equation: most of the trade-in programs have S series but not A series. So $400 S20 today may be worth a lot more than A71 two years down the road, trade-in or resell.

I would go with S20.

I got an A71 when there was the deal with trade in any phone for $75 (I sent in a Galaxy S6) and Galaxy Buds+, which I sold on Ebay. I ended up ~$25 out-of-pocket to convert my S6 to an A71.

I can't compare to an S20 (yet), but I am using an S8 as my main phone. I also got a bunch of free iPhone SE 2020's from the Xfinity deal some time back also. I mostly care about responsiveness and speed, and in that case, based on my usage:

iPhone SE 2020 > Galaxy S8 > Galaxy A71 > Galaxy S6

I'm guessing Galaxy S20 will be the top one when I have it. Mostly made this post to tell you that I'm not that impressed with the processor in the A71. Still using S8 as my main phone because I'm not really an Apple person anyway. I could have switched to the A71 as my main phone, but it did not feel like an upgrade compared to the S8 I had already.

Performance: There is no comparison. 865G vs 765G processors, 12GB vs 6GB RAM. Although, for everyday use- calls, texts, web, youtube etc A71 is pretty good - everything feels pretty smooth 99% of time.

Camera: A71 camera is similar to S8 - although it has a few new modes. But, S20 is far better.

Screen: A71 is a 1080P+ display which is pretty good IMO. It doesn't look pixel-y at all. But S20 display gives you two options - higher resolution with standard refresh rate and 1080P+ at higher refresh rate, which you can definitely see in scrolling smoothness.

Fingerprint scanner: Both have on-screen, but many reviews say A71 is faster by a little bit. I have used A71 and it's just as fast as separate scanner like you will see in Pixel phones.

Updates: A71 will not get security updates as frequent as the S20. Not to mention, S20 will probably get at least one more major OS update than the A71

Build: S20, more premium build with a glass back. But it can break easily too.

Resale / trade: Never seen anyone taking A series for trade, but S series consistently have higher trade in values. Same with resale values - S20 will retail value better than A71 will.

If you can live with smaller screen, I would say s20 gives you a ton more for $100 extra.

Nope. The Trade-in values have significantly dropped and cracked S8 Screen no go.
What does it mean cracked screen no go? they don't accept cracked screen, is that what you're saying?

fi.google.com has a page where you can estimate the trade-in value. For some models, cracked screen is still accepted with a lower value.

But the real deal of inflated trade-in value (cracked screen or not) is long gone. That was about one day around Thanksgivings where Fi offers inflated trade-in value AND hundreds of dollars discount on Samsung phones.

this deal is better for masses with no trade-in required.
