decent deal on an entry level NAS.
i used this for about a year before moving to a qnap.

the functionality is bare, but if you get it set up for local file sharing and maybe non 4k Plex, it's pretty stable.

I have only used synology. I find them updating the software very often and even after owning one for like 8 years. The Software is very good and almost everything is easy to setup.

To setup a VPN; you would need to setup a vpn server which free since it is your hardware and your bandwidth.

I would be interested in doing this but am not super tech/programming savvy. Is there a direction you can point me in to software for setting up my own VPN? I have a free one on my phone (thanks slickdeals!) but I don't believe it is usable for my laptop.

I'm sorry but Chinese software and hardware. I find it hard to trust it with my local storage/backup. I'll pick a Taiwanese solutions over this which are more superior.

My biggest issue is that with 2 drives all you can do is mirror which means you lose 1/2 of your storage. much better off using 4+ drives no matter wat you choose.

Research a bit and you can build your own NAS with FreeNAS S/W for less than $500, even a lot less if you are patient and don't have an imminent need for a server.

That's an odd way to spell unraid Wink

I agree. This isn't the type of thing you want to go cheap on unless you don't care about your data or use it strictly for backups.

Agree! Been owner of QNap TS-251+ for last 3 years, never satisfied with its speed. So finally built my own: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MrFYQD

I own the same model and would not recommend it! This thing will corrupt your files! I upload photos..and when I download from this NAS, the photo cannot be open! It give an error saying "this file is corrupted" I lost 50gb worth of RAW .dng files. I emailed TerraMaster 1 1/2 years ago..no response! I'm using this with 2 WD red drives in raid. Files getting corrupt is around 5% chance. Still unacceptable! The Android app is very buggy...it cannot view .mp4 files. The only pro for this NAS is good GUI.

I used Unraid and Freenas... Both you need to be well versed in IT. I switched to Synology and I love it.

It is a little different when the hardware is designed by non-Chinese and the software is developed by non-Chinese.

VPN service will have apps for you to download. Install the app. Enter your id/password. Select a server. That's it. That's the easy part.

Your vpn should have a vpn app for your os laptop.

The hard part is finding and configure at least two external kill switchs (3 total if you use the kill switch that comes with the app). If the vpn connection goes down hopefully at least one of the kill switch do it job.

Thesr type of nas in general are over priced and have very little room to expand over the years. It better to build a server or buy a server.

You need a large case that can at least hold 18 hdd. This is the case you want. Can hold over 20 hdd if you use 3x5 cages.

Guides are available online and is easily understandable to setup Unraid

I will never own a prebuilt NAS, so m uch more you can do with Unraid. My main server has 235TB , 24 drives

Looking forward to making my own cloud and several VMs

Plex will transcode and destroy pretty much any pre built NAS

easily upgradable , running 2.5gbps network will be going 5-10gbs easily in the future with Cat6 and when switches become cheaper.
1Gbps networks are obsolete.
