decent deal on an entry level NAS.
i used this for about a year before moving to a qnap.
the functionality is bare, but if you get it set up for local file sharing and maybe non 4k Plex, it's pretty stable.

To setup a VPN; you would need to setup a vpn server which free since it is your hardware and your bandwidth.
I would be interested in doing this but am not super tech/programming savvy. Is there a direction you can point me in to software for setting up my own VPN? I have a free one on my phone (thanks slickdeals!) but I don't believe it is usable for my laptop.
Research a bit and you can build your own NAS with FreeNAS S/W for less than $500, even a lot less if you are patient and don't have an imminent need for a server.
That's an odd way to spell unraid
chinese nas software , good luck with your data.
Purchase an unraid key for 129, gets you unlimited drives to build your own server with hardware

Agree! Been owner of QNap TS-251+ for last 3 years, never satisfied with its speed. So finally built my own: https://pcpartpicker.co

VPN service will have apps for you to download. Install the app. Enter your id/password. Select a server. That's it. That's the easy part.
Your vpn should have a vpn app for your os laptop.
The hard part is finding and configure at least two external kill switchs (3 total if you use the kill switch that comes with the app). If the vpn connection goes down hopefully at least one of the kill switch do it job.
You need a large case that can at least hold 18 hdd. This is the case you want. Can hold over 20 hdd if you use 3x5 cages.

I will never own a prebuilt NAS, so m uch more you can do with Unraid. My main server has 235TB , 24 drives
Looking forward to making my own cloud and several VMs
Plex will transcode and destroy pretty much any pre built NAS
easily upgradable , running 2.5gbps network will be going 5-10gbs easily in the future with Cat6 and when switches become cheaper.
1Gbps networks are obsolete.
